Summer Surf Race Between Steamer Commanche and Palmetto
The Steamer Commanche carrying about 150 Georgetonians to North Island for a day of sea bathing met a rival Palmetto in a high spirited race back to port. Captain Springs steered the Commanche while Mr. Kaminski and party on Palmetto briefly paused to challenge the larger craft. The Commanche finished the 12 mile trip in one hour with Palmetto a close three seconds behind, delighting onlookers and showcasing friendly nautical rivalry.
