Captain's Wife Drowned as Canal Boat Founders
The wife of Captain Paul West hall of the coal boat Charles O Rourke was breakfasting on board at anchor near Prince's Bay west of Sandy Hook when the vessel suddenly sank. The captain escaped to the upper deck but watched his wife disappear as the boat went under. A tugboat rescued him after about twenty minutes. a search failed to locate the wife.

Allentown reports say engineer Calvin Frederick may have been dead at the throttle when his westbound freight passed a danger signal near Perryville and crashed into a rear train. Brakemen Richard Miller and Cyrus Young were badly scalded. Frederick was found dead with hand on the throttle.
