Burton chief of police Thomas Glassburner announces his candidacy for sheriff. A Ohio native, Navy WWII veteran, he has served five years as Burton’s chief and seven years as Miles Heights village chief, citing a goal to raise his three children in a community free of commercial gaming.
In Chardon a series of voter education meetings on the constitutional convention question continued. Attorney Tom Rowley led the session on Finance and Taxation with Q and A. The next gathering is set for March 28 at 8 15 PM in the Courthouse Common Pleas Room with Charles W. White leading Are the Home Rule Laws for the State Adequate.
Chester mourns Miss Hattie Miller age 65 daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Max Miller died Monday at Huron Road hospital Cleveland. Survived by four brothers Charles Mentor Will Cleveland Frank Willoughby August and sister Rose. Funeral at Davis Funeral Home Willoughby Wednesday March 19 at 2 pm burial Chester cemetery.
Mrs. Myra Dodge Pfenniger 59 widow of Frank Pfenniger died March 6 after a stroke in a Cleveland hospital. Born in Cleveland, she lived most of her life in Geauga County and is survived by her mother, three daughters, a sister, and a son killed in World War II. Funeral services at Burr funeral home with Rev. Elmer Hostetler officiating. burial in Chardon cemetery.
Governor Lausche plans to attend the Maple Festival old-timers party in Chardon on March 28. The 65 and over crowd will enjoy contests, music by the Four Woodsmen, and a broadcast by WJW Cleveland. Reservations through Mr Carlson, Chardon, or attend at the door. dinner at 12:30, $1.50.
Chester Geauga area letters report the White Elephant Sale committee led by Gail Painter Russell Ball C Oxenrider W Bray and Don Lindsay gathering items for the Russell School sale on March 22 public invited.
Carl F Kronk longtime deputy announces candidacy for the Republican sheriff nomination. Born Mayfield village March 4 1905 he attended Nottingham school and Collinwood high. He owns Claridon Center Garage and is active in Claridon Congregational church and local Masonic and Eastern Star bodies. He pledges to maintain the highest type of law enforcement if elected.
Hugh H. Allyn 77 retired Cleveland Trust Co vice president died of a heart ailment at home on Aquilla Road. Services were held in Cleveland last Friday. Surviving are his wife Minerva Naylor Allyn and daughter Mrs William R MacDonald mothercraft editor of the Cleveland Press.
Allen Franks a senior at Auburn School and son of Mr and Mrs Elmer Franks Franks Read has won a four year scholarship in the College of Agriculture at Ohio State University The award announced by L L Rummell Dean of the College of Agriculture notes he placed among the upper five in Northeastern Ohio on the Ohio State Agriculture Test for Seniors taken at Burton and Chardon in February Franks was fourth in Geauga County in the Senior Scholarship Test in the State
The Women’s Hospital Association of Geauga County stages a style show auction and dance on Saturday April 5 at the Burton school gym. The event features spring fashions for all ages and a novelty costume contest with a $10 prize. Tickets cost $1 and proceeds go to the new hospital fund.
Howard Brothers dairy herd in Bainbridge led Geauga County February production with 1440 pounds of milk and 53.9 pounds of butterfat per cow. Harold McNish of Middlefield second with 1490 pounds milk and 50.1 butterfat per cow. High butterfat cow was a Howard Bros Holstein at 109.3 pounds and 4.9 percent. top milk producer was Howard McNish Lester Yoder's Holstein at 2340 pounds with 3.3 percent.
Geauga Dairy Herd Improvement Association reported that the Howard Brothers herd of 36 Holsteins placed second in the state dairy herd improvement contest. County agent Leland Schuler announced the award made during State Farm Week at Columbus on Tuesday evening.
Nearly half of the $9,000 1952 quota for Geauga County Chapter of the American Red Cross has been turned in at the chapter headquarters. Fund Chairman Mrs Richard Clause says about $5,000 remains and two thirds of the county has not yet reported. Newbury led, with Mrs Philip Gelzer as chairman.
In Burton Barbara Goff reports bake sale at Vern’s Hardware by the Burton Chapter of the Geauga County Hospital Association, and various group meetings at the school cafe teria and fire station. Highlights include Easter fashion show hats, final P T A meeting, Red Cross drive, and a 30th Adrem Club birthday with circus themed favors.
Burton Rolling Gros venor Hull of Burton is one of two Ohio University seniors chosen for a regular Air Force appointment upon June graduation. Only 234 of about 7,150 ROTC graduates this June earned commissions from 2,000 Distinguished Military Students across 187 colleges. Hull, a College of Education senior, will receive a Bachelor of Science in Education at the June 8 commencement.
Chester Grange invites all county grange members to a March 25 meeting at the Community Church. Oliver Bolton, candidate for Congress in the 11th district, will present a non political report on the pros and cons of the St. Lawrence Seaway. An 8 PM business meeting precedes the lecture.
