Dwight Morrow denies presidential aspirations in a compact notes section while a regional weather update reports 57 degrees at 7 30 p m and 63 degrees at noon with a cloudy sky and sunrise at 6 02 am sunset at 5 11 pm.
Washington Oct 14 Friends of President Hoover moved to refute claims by Rev John J Burke that Hoover violated his oath in a Lutherans letter They released a private telegram Hoover sent to Cardinal Mundelein on Sept 24 expressing cordial greetings to the National Eucharistic Conference.
The Peoples State bank of Hammond opened on Hohman Street as the receiver for the old Peoples Co-Operative State Bank. President J. K. Stinson voiced optimism, predicting daily deposits may exceed 25000. Officials from other Hammond banks attended, wishing success for the new enterprise.
Hammond police questioned clerk George Seligman after a morning holdup at Feltman Currie Shoes, where $250 was looted from the safe. Seligman tied, the robbers escaped in a green Chevrolet coupe with Michigan plates, heading toward Hammond.
New York October 14 Mayor James J Walker told the United Real Estate Owners association he has had enough of public office. He said the glory and glitter are gone and he wants to leave the city better off than he found it with nothing more to gain from service.
East Chicago aldermen set the civil city tax rate at 1.14 for next year after trimming the sanitary district budget by one cent. The council signaled immediate start of a long discussed fire station project on Wabash tracks and Kennedy avenue, with plans to add Harbor station at Broadway and Alder streets and remodel Guthrie street precinct. A committee will meet with the mayor and public works to launch the program now, while stop and go light questions at 151st and Forsyth were referred to the street and alley panel.
Whiting October 14 John Chizmar of East Chicago found guilty on two of three charges after arrest by Motorcops Howerton and Kaminsky. Fined five dollars and costs for speeding and for reckless driving. not guilty on disorderly conduct. One ticket removed from his operator license. No case filed on assault and battery with intent. Other rulings include forgery bound over to Crown Point Criminal Court and drunkenness fines and suspended sentences.
In Logansport Indiana on October 14 Coun ty Probation Officer O M Campbell intervened in a battle after a car crash. Ten intoxicated men attacked him but Campbell knocked eight to the ground and others fled. Howard Wistler 23 7 and Jack Tyner 42 were arrested for intoxication with Tyner also charged with driving while intoxicated.
John Etzold once served as Lake County court reporter in Judge Martin Smith's court for years. He died at St. Catherine's hospital East Chicago after a stroke in his Twin City hotel room on Broadway Indiana Harbor. He had recently opened a public stenographer's office in the United States National Bank building. The body will be taken to Huntington to the home of his sister.
Frank Jerry Baird a 49 year old bricklayer of 18382 Davis Avenue Robertsdale died after being found on Stanton Avenue between 121st and 122nd streets. Coroner attributed death to acute alcoholism. Burial plans paused until sister in Pittsburgh can be located.
Charles Eggers of Whiting was elected president of the Indiana Bricklayers union at the state convention in Fort Wayne. He belongs to Local No. 6, Whiting, parent for Lake and Porter counties. Also elected were M. J. Snider of Muncie vice president, Harry McMillan of Indianapolis secretary, and Chester Kizer of Terre Haute treasurer.
Two armed men robbed the Medlock jewelry store in Clinton stealing jewelry valued at about 20000 dollars. They forced the clerks to the floor and escaped through a rear door where their car was parked. Police and posses searched western Indiana and eastern Illinois for the pair.
Dr. Frank D. McElroy former Hammond High principal is elected president of the State Teachers College at Mankato Minnesota. He previously taught in Illinois and Ohio at the Cleveland School of Education and is a graduate of the Indiana State Teachers' College.
Police raided a craps game at 268 State Street arresting eight men. Organizer Leslie Prout of 729 State Line Street booked for running a gambling house. Others charged include John O Leary 603 Truman Street Stanley Sowinski 292 Gostlin Street Jerome McPhie 629 Logan Street George Smith Gary Claude Pratt 188 Lewis Street Cecil Pierce 603 Michigan Street Howard Louis Lincoln Hotel. All released on bonds awaiting city court Friday. Detectives Sergis Singer Warner Lute and Steffey led the operation.
Benton Harbor Michigan reports Judge C E White fined L C Holland of Gary Indiana $1000 after his conviction for negligent homicide in the death of Mrs Mary Maine of Chicago in an automobile crash dated October 12 1929.
Attorney Hyman Cohen of East Chicago files a suit in Hammond Superior Court naming Ben Strong former Lake county sheriff as defendant. The note dated May 5 1930 carries 37131 50 principal with 4000 attorney fees requested in the action.
Dwight W. Morrow, former ambassador, said he looked forward to voting for Hoover in 1932 and ran for the Senate, not the presidency, a stance that drew little surprise among Washington politicians who noted the talk began in New Jersey amid his strong primary win.

Hammond Plant officials of Lever Brothers awaited the arrival of Lord Leverhulme head of the British firm. He travelled with companions from Toronto and stayed at the Blackstone Hotel in Chicago. The visit planned to view the $5 million Hammond manufacturing unit aimed at serving the middle western market. Publicity was avoided and no interview was granted.
Hammond Technical High School will resume aviation courses this winter under director Straley Thorpe. Free lectures and discussions require registration with Director Fred Barrows, starting with an aero dynamics talk in two weeks. Helen Akers eight year old daughter of farmer John Akers near DeMotte Indiana suffered a fractured right hip and severe facial cuts when struck by a truck as she stepped from a school bus in front of her home. Glenn Ellis of Hammond driver of the truck said the bus had no school signs and he was released after investigation. The girl is expected to recover doctors said.

Friends disclose Mrs Ray Kirstein 62 took denatured alcohol at her son’s home in Indiana Harbor after a recent ill health and operation. She died late yesterday. funeral plans pending with services expected in Chicago and burial at Waltheim Cemetery.
Two Calumet City men Frank Konka and Frank Mangal gathered 300 pounds of long stemmed mushrooms in Griffith Indiana. They claim a new local record and distributed the harvest to friends yesterday.
Harry J. Steck of Hammond was absolved of blame in the death of Tom J. Clark on State Line Street near Douglas after an inquest at Hammond Superior Courthouse. Deputy Coroner Chester Owens ruled Clark died from an accident after stepping into the street between two parked cars.
Special Judge Albert B. Chipman delayed a ruling on the Cary heirs case involving Lake Michigan frontage near Gary. The delay stems from a supplementary complaint by Gary Land Company and the fact two heirs are minors requiring ten days’ notice. The judge will review authorities before final decision on November 3.
Tony Bernovich of 111 Hanover Street Hammond escaped unharmed after his sedan was struck by a South Shore interurban at the Dearborn avenue crossing. Another driver Levi Harman of Indianapolis Forwarding Co Chicago avoided collision by swerving his trailer as gates descended at Hahman Street crossing.
Marion Indiana reports a fatal fire that engulfed Opal Riddle who was playing with matches. The 3 year old died last night from the injuries sustained in a clothing fire.
Ja bez Howland a 68 year old Monon veteran engineer died at Rensselaer hospital after falling from the running board of Train No 7 near Surrey Saturday afternoon. He suffered a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage, never regaining consciousness. The incident left his balance or illness as possible causes. Howland, a resident of Indianapolis, had long served as fireman and then engineer.
A 70 year old farmer named Jacob Deich died after a fall from a load of fodder near English Indiana on October 14. He suffered a broken neck in the accident.
