Lake County Taxpayers Association and civic groups back a plan to merge county offices and cut the fee system. Legislation will be pursued in the Indiana General Assembly, with council fights planned in Crown Point to reduce the annual levy. Proposals include stopping county poor relief borrowing, lowering tuberculosis funds, and merging bridge and highways departments for savings.
Samuel Sauer, a prominent Indiana Harbor businessman, was found dead in his car four miles west of Fowler after leaving his bakery to attend to business. A rubber around the head and a revolver were found. $24 cash remained on him. The exact motive remains unknown.
Police theorize Marion Grant Ellis a 29 year old Hammond and Calumet City resident and alleged illicit liquor dealer was killed for information he gave to authorities. Ellis identified by Hammond police and Shertillon records, found shot multiple times on a Hammond Gary boundary roadside. His uncle William Trader says Ellis admitted selling small amounts of alcohol and had previously survived an auto shooting attempt.
Fire Dept from Harbor and Calumet stations battled the blaze for over an hour. Owner WW Schukovich and attendant Jon Mazanik suffered painful burns as grease and oil fed the flames. The loss was estimated at 4000 dollars with damage to the building and interior.
A Ministry of Agriculture survey reports Scotland has 14,372,000 acres of agricultural land, about 72 percent of total area. Crops and grass total 4,665,462 acres with arable 3,135 acres and permanent grass 1,532,652. Charles Malavagas of Cleveland pleaded guilty in Valparaiso city court to reckless driving and leaving the scene after a July 29 crash on State Road 30 near Valparaiso. Police officer Coleman J. Witters chased him to Deep River, returning him to the city for sentencing. Leser of Michigan City reported the collision that disabled his car and led to the chase.
Rumors that Fay Williams a demented World War veteran serving a life term in Michigan for murder of his sister was the kidnapper of Edith Mac Dierdorf were discounted when it was learned Williams was in Brazil on the day of the girl’s disappearance. Reports in Brazil claimed a Williams confession before a Vigo county jail kangaroo court.
Galveston Ind August 29 more than 3000 persons joined a town celebration for the new town hall despite a town board prohibition on street dancing. An old fire truck was used by the crowd and local businessmen criticized the ban urging the event be moved to Lincoln of nearby town.
Lowell Indiana gains 40 acres donated by Representative Thomas Grant for a city forest project. Frank Betz of Hammond donates 500 two year old walnut trees, and H A Mixwell adds 4000 trees. Plans commit to 15 year growth before public use, with state Forester Ralph Wilcox supporting the effort.
About 500 of the 688 Ton family members attended the 25th reunion in Thornton forest preserve. Mrs Sarah Meningenberg of Oak Glen won oldest attendee honors while Shirley Leimber of Parnell Avenue claimed the youngest prize. Mrs Feningenberg is 79 and her great granddaughter is 5.
Indianapolis Aug 29 Elmer Q Lockyear state appellate court judge urged Governor Harry G Leslie to authorize a state board to compel hospital and infirmary administrators to accept individuals ruled fit for institutional care. The issue centers on an elderly Evansville man who reportedly has lived in an infirmary cell for 15 years.
Aug 29 Chicago reports Mrs Anne Morrow Lindbergh told reporters at the national air races that the baby is fine and refused to answer further questions amid a crowd.
Mike Quint president of the Hammond Saengerbund Fidelia expects more than 2600 spectators for a Midwest field meet at Turner Field this Sunday. Six Chicago German clubs compete in wrestling weight lifting and other events with 500 to 1000 fans from the city. Detroit Milwaukee and Sibenowan will send delegations. The program begins at 4 o clock with weight lifting followed by soccer wrestling and handball. Evening dances will be held at the Saengerbund Fidelia clubhouse on Indiana Sohl streets serving as headquarters.

Burial will be in Oak Ridge cemetery Oak Glen. He is survived by his wife Fannie a son Charles and a daughter Mrs Charles Wagner of South Holland. Young Brothers of Holland J Ind funeral directors have charge.
Grant Stout a 79 year old Chicago peddler was bitten on the left leg when a dog jumped through a screen door at 462 Fields avenue Hammond yesterday. He received treatment at police headquarters for lacerations.
The Tram mend chapter No 123 of the Order of Ahepa hosts its annual outing at Grueners grove on Sheffield avenue and Frohman street. Admission is free and the program includes games and refreshments. The organization, founded July 22 1922, spans 280 chapters with more than 25 000 members across the United States. Harry Tampary presides over the Hammond chapter.
Two mild shocks were recorded on the seismograph at Fordham University. The first occurred at 4 34 a m and the second at 4 40 a m. The event is estimated to be about 3 000 miles away, likely off the coast of Ecuador.
The East Chicago water board set a 3130 000 contract as the low bid for the new lake intake piping to Petroleum Pipe Co. Other intake contracts will go to Mayer Chapman Scott Co of New York next Wednesday. Total extension cost around 400 000.

Jaurett, daughter of Mrs. Hula Appel, was kidnapped Wednesday evening and found murdered Thursday in an alley two blocks from her home. Police and volunteers mobilized in an era of rapid citywide pursuit. The body was found beside a garage on Carrel Street after a 30 hour disappearance.
In South Bend authorities disclosed details of the kidnapping and murder of eight year old Mavarine Appel. The child's body was found torn in a barn alter near her home after she vanished Wednesday. Her mother Evda Appel collapsed when told the horrific facts. Police questioned a suspect released after inquiries at the home and continued a broad search for evidence, with further investigation of railroad camps and hobo dens.
