Temperature today recorded at First Trust and Savings Bank building Hammond shows a rise from Teo teau to noon. Weather appears partly cloudy at noon with a steady rise in temperature and sunset values noted.
The weekly East Chicago health briefing notes births and 47 deaths with no major auto accidents reported. Local arrests in Twin City over two days are listed alongside civic notices for St Catherine's Hospital and school events at Washington Park.
Prominent Gary attorney Ernest Force, backed by James Watson, is poised to become tenth district chairman tomorrow at Rensselaer as W. J. McAteer nears re election without opposition. The convention in Crown Point gave Force strong statewide backing and an ovation to Walter Schrage as he retires as county chairman.

Crown Point Ind May 32 William Binton and James Blark members of the board of county commissioners planned to meet this afternoon to select a third member to succeed William Fulton who died last Thursday. William H Olds, Republican nominee at the recent primary, is widely viewed as the likely appointee to serve the balance of Fultons term expiring next January. The two commissioners reportedly agreed on Olds and Republican leaders in the county favor his election.
New suits filed today in Hammond Superior Court include Trust and Savings Bank of Calumet City versus Winifred A Bryen at 749 Jefferson Street Gary for a $1000 promissory note. Joseph H Abrahamson vs Herbert Hayworth at 3022 Calumet Avenue Hammond for possession of an auto and $300 in damages for unlawful detention. State Bank of Hammond v Ernest Felder on a $159 promissory note. J Blatsviouse & Co. vs J R Stodd in ejectment.
Valentine Penrose of Brown County dies at 103 in Pleasant Valley near Nashville Indiana after a heart ailment. Funeral services scheduled for this afternoon at his home community.
Reports say the recovery of the bodies of two men drowned in Michigan last week is doubtful. The Chicago council will hold its regular meeting this evening. The first morning session at East Chicago City Court was held today with morning sessions to continue for the next three months.
Police search continues for two young men who robbed a Shore Line bus Saturday night. Clark McQuilken elected vice chairman and Stanley Wieklinski treasurer of Lake County Republican Central Committee at Crown Point. Tim ONeil urged to stage outdoor boxing in Twin City this summer at the baseball park opposite the old Republic mill.
Whiting residents attended the funeral of William J. Fulton in Gary on Saturday morning. Numerous Mother’s Day programs were held in Whiting yesterday afternoon and evening. Whiting children received their first holy communion in local Catholic churches yesterday morning.
A regular meeting of Whiting Boy Scout Troop No 8 will be held at 7:15 this evening in the Methodist church parlors. The Twilight Playground ball league starts tomorrow evening at 6:30 at the Community playground. Judith J Anderson returns to duty at the Community Center after six weeks away for illness and surgery. Old posters and telegraph pole eyes will be removed as Whiting Boy Scouts complete the task. George Richards of Detroit seeks a lost satchel with clothes. he left it at Whiting Park last weekend and found it gone when he returned.
Fire hydrants are being painted bright yellow under the supervision of the Whiting fire department. Drivers are warned to avoid parking near the hydrants to keep lines clear for emergency use.
Lucilla Louck found a pair of glass heads on an eastbound Midwest motor coach Saturday. Whiting police are keeping the heads in the safe for safekeeping.
Chicago and Detroit firefighters face off at Cubs and Sox parks in Chicago on July 10 and 11. Tickets available by calling the Whiting fire department. Proceeds benefit the Fireman Pension Fund.

Insurgent leaders led by Joe Conroy failed to oust Martin as delegates from Gary and Whiting lined up, forcing John Underwood to withdraw. Mayor Thomas Boyle opened the meeting urging harmony amid anticipated fall campaigns and party dissension. Other elected officers included John Toburg secretary Harry Arnold treasurer and Mrs J. B. Clayton vice chairwoman.
Roscoe EB Woods and Co reports a real estate upswing after the sale of the northwest corner of Oakley Avenue and Fayette Street to Firestone Tire for 54000. The deal funds a 50000 service station project, with owner Roy Lee and Julius Kosanke as previous owners. Whiting unit of the American Legion Auxiliary will conduct its poppy sale on May 21. Disabled World War I veterans made the memorial poppies and will be paid one cent per poppy, with wages totaling about $100,000 this year to support families of veterans left destitute while disabled.

Keddie Jackson and his cousin Jimmie Conners played a rocks for balls carnival game at home. A stray rock left Eddie with a head gash after a throw, and Hammond police Sergeant Oscaur Borchert escorted him home for treatment.
George Moore a 10 year old of 19 Clinton street admitted to stealing 356 from the Hammond cigar store where he worked and told police of a two day spending spree including 300 on horse betting at Aurora track. He was bound over to Lake Criminal court on grand larceny charges with bond set at 2000 and jailed after court.
Seven people arrested in Gary on Saturday night paid fines in Justice Minas court. Fifteen others arrested Sunday remain jailed after a sheriff led weekend raids at the People hotel Liberty House and Washington Inn amid a large illegal gambling and vice sweep. Prostitution and associating charges were filed against several individuals, with Bac paying $21.40 at arraignment.
Michigan City May 12 The administration board at Lansing authorized one million dollars for relocating U S 31 between Benton Harbor and South Haven on a 200 foot right of way. The project will cost about 35 000 per mile and provide scenic views of Lake Michigan as it runs along the shore. The highway commission authorized bidding and contract awards this year for what may be called the Blossom Highway.
Two masked youths, about 22 or 23, halted a Shore Line bus 61 at a Hammond East Chicago border spot at midnight. They forced driver F Os Smith to divert to Riley Park and looted $60 from passengers before fleeing in an unspecified car with Illinois plates. No arrests yet.
Captain Frank T. Roach of the Gary detective bureau says a Lake county primary vote fraud probe will be presented to the grand jury after arrests including six Chicago waitresses and W C Bush of Gary. The investigation centers on imported voters and repeaters detected at Gary polling places.
In Hebron Indiana on Friday afternoon Sheriff Barney Maxwell and an aide seized two hundred bottles of home brew and a pint of liquor at the Kenneth Yeaglea farm south of Hebron. Yeaglea and Fred Moon were arrested for bootlegging tied to an onion farm operation. Yeaglea dropped the liquor, a bottle slid on the floor but did not break. They were jailed in Valparaiso awaiting charges.
Moves circulate among Hammond officials to revisit the 9 to 8 vote that blocked A M Turner for park board president and endorsed George Geyer. Critics allege retaliation for Turner's stance on the city hall site and say the council seeks to rescind the action amid ongoing bonding power debate. Mayor Schonert favored Turner. local park board veteran Harry Glair notes continued dispute.
Five year old John Eaton wandered near chained carnival dogs on Arizona Street Hessville and was bitten on the right leg as a dog leaped its chain. The animals are owned by T E Dion showman with a carnival at Kennedy Avenue and Adams Street Hessville.
Edward Uartz 26 of East Chicago to testify at inquest into the death of Harold Schiff 10 found slain near Montrose and Clarendon avenues. Schiff was struck as he picked lilacs for his mother. driver fled but was traced by police from Indiana plate noted by Mrs. Oranne Day who pursued the car. Uartz cited loss of head as reason for fleeing and returned to Chicago for the inquest.
Eli Allee aged 60 collapsed from a spas plexy while sitting on a running board on a downtown street in Michigan City Indiana He remained seated as the car owner started the engine and drove off discovering Allee was dead.
