Hammond prepares for a Tuesday session where six railroads and their chief engineers meet with the Citizens Grade Crossing Elimination committee. Edward J. Noonan engineers counsel, says no insurmountable objections yet and an agreement is anticipated on the elevation plan.

East Chicago reports May building activity rising sharply with 67 permits totaling $915,707.18, a 600 percent gain from May 1929. Empire Refining leads the month with 17 new permits totaling $813,250 for manufacturing work at the refinery.
Harry Hanford 60 of Thayer Indiana died last night at the Christian hospital after an operation he had been brought there several days earlier. The Bea will be sent to Thayer for trial.
In Porter county Indiana Special Judge Bruce B. Loring overruled Edgar Crumpacker’s motion for a new trial in a replevin action against Dunes Lumber & Supply Co and Ralph Bradford. Crumpacker sought return of an office building in Portage township, while the firm claimed an equitable lien of 186 dollars. Attorneys: Edmund J. Freund for Crumpacker. Kelly & Ryan and T. C. Mullen for the defendants.
Cy Marshall, 26, in Indianapolis, remained in critical condition at City hospital with a fractured skull and other injuries from the Memorial Day 500 mile race. Paul Marshall, 34, of Detroit, Cy's brother and the rideing mechanic, was fatally hurt in the same crash and funeral services were held here. Relatives, including Paul's four children Letta Margaret Jeanne Elizabeth Paul and Baby Shirley Anne, gathered for the funeral. Paul's children attend Bennett school in Detroit.
Col. Roberto Fierro, famed Mexican air ace, was 11 hours overdue on a flight from Los Angeles to New York. Airports across the southwest were alerted and Kelly field officials contacted his Los Angeles representative as search efforts continued. He planned to proceed to Mexico City on a goodwill mission aboard a Lockheed Sirius monoplane after a layover at the army airfield.

John Carney 26 of Chicago bonded 1000 dollars after a Brunswick Indiana crash that killed Marie Cullen 22 of Chicago. Cullen a switchboard operator at International Harvester died from a skull fracture and severe injuries after Carney’s sedan left old Route 41 and struck a ditch. Carney was intoxicated and slightly injured. he was released on cash bond posted by his father.
The Midwest Steel corporation, an Indiana entity, becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of National Steel with nominal capital of 100000 dollars and planned future increase to 50000000 dollars. It will operate in the Chicago area, housing a mill project costing 40000000 to 50000000 dollars on a Lake Michigan tract of 1000 acres, expanding to 1100 acres after reclamation. construction start date pending.
Ninety year old F. M. Applegate from Noblesville visited the county clerk and applied for a hunting license to shoot rabbits. He wrote firmly without glasses and is believed the oldest man in Indiana to receive a hunting license this year. He long worked sixty years as a blacksmith in Noblesville.
Literary Digest figures from Gary, Hammond, East Chicago, and Whiting reveal 14.8 percent favor enforcement. Repeal leads with 47 percent, modification 38.2 percent, combining to 85.2 percent backing either repeal or modification. East Chicago leans wet while Whiting stays driest. John Shiner 52 of 1613 Massachusetts Street Gary took his life at home Saturday afternoon by slashing his throat from ear to ear. He left no word for wife or children and was found in the basement after his wife investigated the ghastly scene following neighbors' cries and police arrival. He had battled ill health and unemployment for months.
The Daily Chronicle and Daily News merge to form the News Chronicle in London. The new paper will have a total circulation of 1,800,000.
Karl Biedenmeister, 35, of Indianapolis, died after his single engine plane crashed at Columbus airport. He was a licensed transport pilot employed by Columbus Airways, Inc. at the time of the accident.

At 2658 Fillmore street Bessie Evans held as a prostitute and Oscar Winbush as a vagrant. Capt William Linn led the raiding squad with Fred Gullstrom Lew Seuer Nell Platt and Andrew Miller.
A string of weekend traffic crashes left multiple injured across Hammond Chicago and near Joliet. John Patterson 60 suffered a deep ankle cut after being struck by a motorcycle sidecar on Calumet avenue. Violet Belchine 19 was cut on the forehead when her car was sideswiped on Indianapolis boulevard. Mary Williams 1103 Schrage avenue and Joseph Schafer collided at 112th and Indianapolis, with Williams sustaining a nose and knee injuries. Two Chicago girls Evelyn Lourie and Loretta Hecklethorn were hurt when the car they rode in rolled over near the Lincoln Highway and Route 41 aftermath of a Cedar Lake trip. bystanders fled.
Ernest Dever of New Brunswick New Jersey landed a loggerhead turtle weighing about 150 pounds in a fishing craft at Ocracoke North Carolina. It is unusual for a loggerhead of this size to be landed by rod and reel, though these turtles are sometimes caught in nets.
