Tremors Sweep Intermountain Country Tuesday Night

Strong earthquakes were felt across the region from Preston Idaho to south of Salt Lake City with Brigham City and Ogden reporting the strongest tremors. No damage was noted though many residents were frightened as seismographs at the University of Utah recorded a major local disturbance.

State Fair and Conference At Salt Lake

The semi annual conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Great Inland Empire Exposition drew large crowds at the state capital Salt Lake City. The Inland Empire Exposition was the best ever held in the state. Garland and the Bear River Valley were well represented at both events.

Girls Basketball Teams Ready for School Outfit Fund

The 7th and 8th grade girls at our public schools have formed basketball teams and are close to raising funds for new equipment. The outfit will be bought soon and grounds beside the school are being prepared. Several games are planned to attract local interest.

The Bear River Stake quarterly conference scheduled for today and tomorrow has been postponed one week and will now be held in this city on Saturday October 16 and Sunday October 17.

County Commissioners Approve Road Change and Appointments

The Board of County Commissioners met in regular session on October 4 with full attendance. They granted the J D Peters petition to alter the road to the cement factory pending right of way and grade construction. A map request for the Oregon Short Line Malad valley branch was approved, and assessor plat book changes authorized. FP King won the bridge project grading at 25 cents per yard. Poor farm reports showed $569.85 receipts and $55.25 expenditures. John Osler was named deputy road commissioner and Delos Adams registrar of vital statistics. Permits to wed were issued to Alfonzo Poulson and Laura Jensen Bear River, Danial Mathias and Rebecca Tingey Brigham, Benjamin Tolman and Ellen Wheatley Honeyville.

Wreck at the Beet Sheds in Utah Sugar Co Yard

Two defective beet cars caused a wreck at the beet sheds of the Utah-Idaho Sugar Co Monday night. Uncoupled cars rolled into two empties, one toppled and bunched another. Mr Henrie suffered a bruised hip. A wrecking outfit repaired the cars the next day.

New Tabernacle Erection Planned by Bear River Stake

The Bear River Stake plans a stake house in Garland costing about 40000 dollars. Two Sugar City lots are under consideration for the site, with subscription efforts progressing well in all wards. Authorities expect full funding and praise the community’s booster spirit and hustling citizenship.

Temperance Hall Opens With Pool Billiards and Trade

C J Campbell opens a temperance hall in the former Pearl saloon building. Two tables are in use now with plans for a third pool table and another billiard table. The hall will also sell tobacco cigars and temperance beverages, Success.

Highwayman Fatally Shoots Officer Riley in Salt Lake City

Tuesday evening in Salt Lake City special officer C. C. Riley was shot and killed by a hold up who he had under arrest. The murderer escaped as officers investigated the slaying.

Registration Notice for Sunset Province Electors

Notice sets October 12 and October 26 1909 as the registration days for qualified electors in Sunset Province Box Elder County Utah for the Garland Municipal Election on November 2 1909. Registration hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Garland Globe office on Cutler Street.
