Kansas City and Wichita USDA market notes show cattle and calves steady to higher with mixed demand. Steers and heifers varied by grade, vealers strong, cows and canners uneven but generally lower, hogs uneven with higher early quotes, sows up. sheep steadier with good springers and aged ewes priced.
Grains struggled to hold initial advances on the Board of Trade with slow trading across pits. Wheat and corn gave up much of early progress as the session ended firm, with wheat up around ¾ to 1 percent and corn up about ¼ to ½ percent. Open interest and futures purchases totaled near prior levels, with bids in Kansas City mixing for wheat and corn across several grain classes.

In Omaha area Irvington volunteer fire department is honored by North Omaha Kiwanis and Gov Victor Anderson begins speaking when an alarm interrupts. Chief orders firefighters to battle a house fire, leaving dinner unfinished. Irvington lies just outside Omaha’s northern edge.
A year old girl in Pueblo swallowed plastic welding solvent. Doctor Ted Miller contacted a Philadelphia chemist via police to learn the antidote, and Anita received treatment at Corwin hospital. The child recovered and was described as doing fine.
Marvin Dean Murray, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Murray of 302 Center, died after internal hemorrhaging during admission to Leopold Hospital. He had battled an unidentified rare blood disorder since October, received transfusions in Garden City and Hutchinson, and passed away last night. Survived by his parents, sister Donna Dee, and grandfathers M. W. Murray and J. H. Felke. Funeral at St Mary’s Church with rosary tonight at Garland’s chapel and burial in Valley View cemetery.
In New Orleans area a 16 month old lion clawed and bit 9 year old Martin ONeill after he tried to pet the animal. The lion was owned by Adolph Dammerau who kept other exotic animals in his Jefferson Parish home and garage. About 60 stitches were needed for the boy’s left arm and his condition was reported as fair.
Hospital admittances list several residents including Mrs Frank La Berteaux and Mrs James Husband with addresses in Garden City. Discharges include Adwin Prevo and Mrs Ernest Parton. At St Catherine hospital a birth notices a girl born to Mr and Mrs David Rintoul and three more births to other families today. Building permit notices outline remodeling and new carport projects with costs. Police briefs note bonds posted for two residents on traffic offenses.
The Finnish seamen's union says the tanker Aruba crew will strike to avoid sailing to Communist China with jet fuel. They refused to sail beyond Singapore, citing Nationalist Chinese threats and a UN ban on strategic materials. The ship, loaded at Constanta, may be diverted to Indonesia for reloading, pending action from owners Re-Be Shipping Co.
In Denver Vernon Taylor a 23 year old grocery clerk felled a gunman by striking him with a jar of honey after the suspect robbed another clerk of 100 dollars. Police identified the robber as 48 year old Lyman Alexander and jailed him after treatment for severe head cuts. Taylor was noted as a pitcher for Providence R J Bible College in his senior year.
