Church leader quits National Association of Evangelicals
Rev Kevin Mannoia resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals during a meeting with the executive committee effective July 7. Opposition to plans to work with Protestant groups allied to the National Council of Churches and a fundraising decline helped drive the move. The group represents 51 denominations, 45 000 local congregations, and 250 interdenominational agencies. Donations fell 36 percent to 565 000 between 1999 and 2000, in Mannoia’s first full year. The bylaw barring members from belonging to the National Council was dropped at his urging.
