ConAgra closing hits local economy and shops
The ConAgra fire and plant closure left about 2,300 workers out of work and unsettled the area. Robert Martin of East Garden Village/Quicker Mart reports reduced business, rising receivables, and lingering effects as tenants and workers seek new income sources while others adapt. Windsor Hotel preservation grant denied by KDOT
Windsor Hotel efforts to revive the historic building stall after the Kansas Department of Transportation denied TEA-21 funding, citing weak transportation link. Finney County Preservation Alliance president Eric Keller says the board will meet in July to consider options, including alternate grants and developer interest. A Kansas Heritage grant could have funded structural stabilization, but could not be used since the alliance did not own the building. Keller notes potential tax credits for historic property development and other funding routes from state and federal programs.
