Summer sightings rise in southwest Kansas as snakes emerge from grasses. Kathy Sexson of Lee Richardson Zoo notes most bites are rare and occur only when snakes feel threatened. Back away slowly and avoid grabbing tools to kill snakes. Snakes help control pests and aid soil, yet many misconceptions persist.
Residents encounter several snakes in the plains area including hog-nosed and bull snakes and the prairie rattler the sole venomous species. Cobras have been reported but Kansas officials say bullsnake is more likely. Snakes hide in winter and emerge in warmer seasons seeking food on roads and through tall grass.
Ellsworth AP. Elevator manager Alan Doubrava and others in Kansas faced a bleak harvest. The Kansas Grain Inspection Service and Kansas Agricultural Statistics Service released their first wheat quality report based on 720 carrot samples from 28 counties, showing an average test weight of 60.5 pounds per bushel, above last year and near the 10-year average. Vice President Dick Cheney disclosed he has irregular heart rhythms and will enter a hospital Saturday for tests that likely lead to a pacemaker implant to restore normal rhythm. He described it as an insurance policy and said he would step down if tests show he cannot perform his duties.
