Kansas Wheat Harvest Faces Drought and Frost Fallout
Kansas farmers grapple with drought and spring freeze damage as wheat yields drop to about half of last year’s. In southwest and west central Kansas estimates range 22.5 to 27 million bushels, with Scott City fields at about 25 bushels per acre in a summer fallow plot. Normal precipitation for the year remains well above current totals, and many dryland fields may go unharvested as yields fail to justify cutting. Despite tough odds, farmers cling to higher grain prices and salvage efforts to feed the world and ease rural stresses.
