Industry sues over government subsidies in crop insurance
A coalition of insurance companies filed a federal lawsuit in Council Bluffs alleging the government violated a 1998 contract by cutting fees and subsidies in the federal crop insurance program. They claim losses of at least 60 million dollars between 1999 and 2002 and warn further subsidy cuts may reduce coverage or force mergers.
