Senate Republican leader Knowland Calif voiced confidence Congress will approve construction of an atomic powered merchant ship as proposed by President Eisenhower. The Atomic Energy Committee approved a five million dollar plan to help allies build reactors, while the ship plan faced criticism as a showboat. Knowland predicted the measure would be enacted before Congress acts. He spoke after the GOP leaders meeting with the President, also noting talk of restoring the Dixon Yates transmission line and highway program progress. Secretary Wilson said military strength alone won’t ensure peace without countering Communist ideas, urging continued adequate forces and economic stability.
