Deaths and mncrals Former Local Resident Dies

Gale Wathen Vinzant, longtime Garden City native and World War I veteran, died Sunday in Knoxville at age 67 after years of hospitalization. Born December 13, 1887, he graduated from Garden City High in 1905 and was a Methodist church member. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Friday at Phillips chapel with Rev. Franklyn Edwards officiating and burial in Valley View cemetery.

Thelander Infant Son Died in Topeka Hospital

Richard Louis Thelander Jr the infant son of A L Thelander and Mrs R L Thelander died May 31 three days after birth in a Topeka hospital. Thelander was an Air Force airman stationed in Guam on emergency leave. Survivors include maternal grandparents Octave Lefort Topeka and paternal grandparents Thelander Elgin IL and other relatives.

Former Resident Is Tornado Victim in Winfield Hospital

The Udall tornado toll rose to 80 with the death of Zack West, 71, in a Winfield hospital. West, a former Garden City resident who left about 1940, had farmed north of the city. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and his daughter Zepie, a teacher in Jones school and now teaching near Udall.

James Dennis Mangan five month old son of Mr and Mrs James L Mangan died today at the family home 602 North Tenth after an extended illness The infant will be buried at Hotchkiss Cole Graveside rites probably will be held Thursday

False teeth cause death after coughing incident

GALENA Md. George E Hillberg 62 of Brockton Mass coughed so hard he swallowed his false teeth and choked to death yesterday. He was working on a two cabin cruiser docked near here.

Wheat fell about 1? to 1-1/4 cents with July at 2.00, corn down around 1/2 to 1-1/2 cents at 1.42, oats down about 1/4 to 1/2 cent at 0.655, rye off 1/2 to 2 cents near 1.06. Soybeans mixed, July near 2.44. Trading quiet with profit-taking on rises and no major news direction.

Gas contract to Phillips firm on Kansas turnpike

The Phillips Petroleum Co. won four of six service stations on the Kansas turnpike. Phillips agreed to pay the Turnpike Authority 8.15 cents a gallon at the Lawrence station, 7.85 cents at Towanda, and 7.75 cents at Emporia. Sinclair Oil Co. took Wellington at 6.16 cents, and Socony Mobil Oil Co. won Topeka at 7.754 cents.

Menon Sees Open Door to Freedom for Airmen

Senate committee boosts Air Force funds in defense bill

The Senate Appropriations Committee added over 700 million dollars to Air Force funds and approved a near 32 billion dollar package for AI defense aims. It approved the Marine cutback proposal 13 to 7 and rejected naming senators, with funds sought to cover personnel reductions from 205000 to 193000 by June 30 next year and 49 million additional dollars.
