Lakin USD 215 projects a budget shortfall over 300000 for 2002-03 as declining enrollment and rising health care costs sting finances. Health costs have surged, with yearly insurance rises and funded plans for staff seen as a recruitment tool.
Nearly 550 cowboys entered Beef Empire Days Rodeo. Slack performances began Tuesday at Finney County Fairgrounds with cowboys competing for experience and money, offering 10 to 12 events per session to keep shows efficient. Casey Duggan notes slack helps involve more riders and boosts local revenues via extra ticket sales. The Bulls and the Babes session features 35 bull rides and barrel racing, expanding entertainment and community impact during a busy rodeo week.

Garden City and Dodge City veterans over 60 compete in team roping events at Beef Empire Days and Dodge City Days rodeos. Three teams per city rope three steers each, times summed for a total. This year Dodge City leads 168.9 to 197.2 before final results.
