Rain Delays Wheat Harvest in Southern Kansas

In Kiowa county and southern Kansas, winter wheat dominates plantings with yields from 4 to 21 bushels per acre. KS agricultural statistics show 21 percent very poor and 24 percent poor conditions, 32 percent fair, 22 percent good, and 1 percent excellent amid drought effects.

IBP settles environmental suit with Nebr state for 1.85 million

IBP Inc paid Nebraska 1.85 million as part of a lawsuit settlement over alleged environmental violations at its Dakota City plant. The EPA sued in January 2000 for air and water pollution. The deal funds Dakota County schools, limits discharges to the Missouri River, and adds wastewater upgrades with completion aimed for summer 2003.

In Naco Mexico a once busy border town of 8000 saw a boom with busloads of migrants and 90 room hotel projects but now the plaza is nearly empty. Across the Arizona border illegal crossings have fallen 33 percent to 569507 arrests between Oct 1 and May 14 as U.S. jobs shrink after the Sept 11 attacks.
