Brownback pushes sales tax hike and income tax cut plan
Gov. Sam Brownback unveiled a plan to raise the state sales tax to 6.65 percent while exempting about 388,000 low income individuals from income tax, a move aimed at balancing a roughly 400 million dollar budget. The plan would keep business exemptions largely intact but tax certain limited liability company payments as wage income to raise about 23 million annually. A 50 cent rise in the cigarette tax to 1.29 per pack is proposed, short of the 1.50 cited earlier.
