House Republicans push across-the-board cuts to fix deficit
In Topeka a new budget report on weak state tax receipts sparks bold GOP proposals to slash spending instead of tax increases to close a 400 million shortfall. Rep Whitmer urges proportional 3.6 percent cuts to ending balances, while Bradford proposes a construction materials sales tax and DeGraaf seeks halving hospitality spend and slower car replacement. Jones backs cuts to K 12 and slush funds, urging brave action without tax hikes.

Prewitt Named Interim Garden City Police Chief
Garden City appoints Capt. Courtney Prewitt interim chief as the city searches for a permanent replacement. He has 16 years with the department and will run the Patrol Division while the process unfolds. Prewitt will not apply for the job, per City Manager Matt Allen, who cited leadership and community trust. Chief Hawkins retired after 19 years, and Prewitt aims to hand the department to the next chief in as good a shape as possible.
