Sumaya to compete for national GI Forum award
Garden City Community College student Joaquin Sumaya will travel to Chicago in August to compete for national honors in a program by the American GI Forum. Sumaya won Mr. GI Forum for Kansas at state in June at Ulysses, earning a $500 scholarship after an interview and a speech on ethnic diversity. The winner also participates in GCCC groups and campus activities and has served as a work study in the Print Shop. He helped arrange a performance at the Kansas Statehouse during Hispanic Legislative Day. The national event runs August 8–11 with finalists from several states. Sumaya anticipates some nervousness but confidence overall. Sumaya plans to transfer to Cleveland, Ohio for chiropractic studies after earning his associate degree in 2002.
