Wheat harvest winds down as white wheat grading changes
The Federal Grain Inspection Service revised hard white wheat grading to mark all hard white varieties as white despite color. The change, effective last Saturday, follows weather darkening kernels and misgrading up to 60 percent of Kansas hard white winter wheat as hard red. Kansas Wheat Commission administrator David Frey welcomed the move as government responsiveness. Harvest across Kansas was 78 percent complete, lower than last year and above the long-term average, with northwest counties finishing as northern areas remained in progress.
