Southwest Kansas Honor Flight aims to fly WWII veterans to D C
Garden City organizers backed by USDA have raised about 65 000 dollars for a April Honor Flight. Central Prairie Honor Flight has flown nearly 1 000 veterans from Kansas on about a dozen trips to Washington D C. The plan includes 400 to 500 veterans statewide next spring with groups in Wichita Topeka and Salina. Each veteran costs about 650 dollars covering flight hotel meals and ground transport. Chaperones pay their own way. A 172 seat charter plane may be used from Garden City to serve western Kansas veterans. Funding efforts include local Mosaic fundraisers and online donations to Central Prairie Honor Flights. The program began in 2004 led by Earl Morse and now operates hubs in 89 states including three in Kansas.
