Rain soaked roads slow Finney County repairs and projects

Finney County Public Works handles complaints with a 272-3564 line and logs requests. Gravel work can take two to three weeks due to high demand. Rain delays push back Holcomb Main Street to late September and Eighth Street Kansas Avenue reconstructions to early September. Norma Turley described debris buried in TV Road, including an 80-pound rock, a smashed vehicle, and worsening road conditions since the 1980s.

Nuisance rule wins county approval despite opposition

Finney County commissioners approved a nuisance policy amid strong dissent from about 100 residents. The plan outlines a multistep process for properties deemed nuisances, including a 30 day cleanup window, a 30 day follow up, and possible county cleanup at owner expense. A citizen committee will offer directions and a friendly notice, while some residents urged court enforcement rather than local action.

Community college names new nursing director

A nine year veteran instructor and 1992 GCCC nursing graduate leads efforts to boost retention in the program. Retention fell from 78 percent in 2000 to 53 percent in 2004 as national exam changes pressured curricula. The college plans expanded labs, tutoring and mentors to lift rates and potentially hire another instructor once targets are met.
