Sheriff Whitmore was summoned to Dubuque where J. H. Mullen, a former county convict, was suspected of stealing carpenter tools. Mullen, intoxicated, offered tools for sale and was arrested, but released after Whitmore identified the items as Mullert’s. A 74 year old man named Clark was killed with a club in Clinton Iowa Tuesday morning by fisherman Fred Comstock from Albany. Comstock fled toward Illinois. police and telegraph lines are mobilized as a search spreads. Comstock, 38, dark mustache, 165 pounds, wore a dark gray hat and shirt when last seen in bare feet. The motive remains unknown.
