Will Carlton, a Cornell graduate of 1861, will take charge on October first of the New York Central power plants now under construction. Three large plants employing about four hundred men will supply current for trains entering and leaving New York City. Carlton rose from humble beginnings to become a leading electrical engineer with expertise in underground construction. His career includes time with the Chicago Edison Company and recognition as a top expert in his field.
News notes cement walks are being laid in front of James Hudson and John Meusel on upper Main Street while Ed Finks saloon and Louis Lomrichs marble works also gain new walks. Many unpaved Main Street businesses plan fresh sidewalks before snow, with paving to follow next spring.
Freeport Bulletin reports Freeport may quit the league next year and field an independent team if a satisfactory arrangement isn’t reached. Local games attract strong crowds but high railroad fares erode profits. A committee will seek Beloit games in Wausau and the season may extend two more weeks with additional home games to offset costs.
Colonel Dietrich state inspector of rifle practice urges an earlier selection of the state rifles team for 1906 to allow more practice time before the national match. A curiosity from Jamaica arrives at the Maryland Academy of Sciences. A huge white ant nest three and a half feet in diameter forms from tree sap. Ants build at tree bases or branches and constrict from the inside, resembling hornets in structure but dark brown in color.
Mrs Pat Whitman wife of the state bank manager at Ridgeway Iowa died at the family home in Dodgeville from burns after a kerosene lamp spilled while she fell on stairs last Monday night She was 33 years old and leaves a husband and eight year old daughter She was daughter of Hugh W Jones a wealthy citizen.
Preston Hicks retires after five and a half years as joint owner with Horst C. Gann. Hicks will assist until October 1. thereafter Horst C. Gann becomes editor in chief with Lulu Gann as secretary and treasurer. Hicks, popular with Warren readers, departs for undisclosed future plans. Also a classified note seeks millinery apprentices at Mrs. J. Edward’s.
Stockton Herald reports a 4 4 tie between Stockton and Pearl City after seventeen innings. No runs scored after the eighth, game called with the tie unresolved. Joe Gundry suffered head and back injuries from a rock while unloading for Dr. Nan’s cellar wall. Miss Ethel Harte, Bret Harte’s daughter, died in London and drew sympathy from English literary figures who form a fund committee.
The Tanover Journal reports sharper progress in the last year or two than the previous five or six in the county. Mentions the Ciena Pair and Thanksgiving. Names Dorothea Fiedler, her brother, Alice Youngana, and John Wise of Galena visiting Eva Mawes. Hopes Carroll Telephone Co. will set apples between Savinnasiued and the Daviess line before winter for better county communication.
