Pioneer's Death Highlights Civil War Vet William A Benton

William A Benton a McGregor Iowa resident for over 50 years died at Prairie du Chien sanitarium on Saturday. Born in New York state about 75 years ago he settled in McGregor in 1856. He was McGregor’s first republican postmaster serving through Lincoln Johnson and Grant administrations. Benton led Co H Twenty First Town Infantry and campaigned in Missouri under Gen Pope then under Gen Grant taking part in battles toward Vicksburg. He later returned to McGregor to assist his wife who ran the post office, served six years as Clayton County Sheriff from 1874 to 1880. He is survived by one son and his remains rest beside his wife in the McGregor cemetery.

Remains of John Fitzpatrick Interred at Greenwood Cemetery

The remains of John Fitzpatrick, killed yesterday morning by the Burlington stub, were interred in Greenwood Cemetery. The funeral was held at 1 30 o'clock from Ross undertaking rooms.

Interment Made at Hanover for Mrs Sam McClave

The remains of Mrs Sam McClave were taken from St Charles Ohio to Hanover for burial after a sudden death at the station. A coroner's inquest was held as officials sought the cause. Mrs McClave had moved from Hanover to St Charles only weeks before and was said to be in robust health until the morning illness.

Board of Supervisors Meet at Court House in Afternoon

County officials held a routine session in the Court House with P. M. Tiffany presiding. M. F. Collins was re-elected County Poor Farm superintendent and Peter Groesbeck kept his janitor post. Petitions for township bridges were read and Kempter's Book Store advertised its large stock of school books at low prices.

State board of equalization to organize amid slow county returns

Springfield dispatch reports the state board of equalization will meet on Tuesday to organize as only a few counties have filed returns. Eighteen named members from Chicago to Pittsfield will hold seats this year, with Edward Jackson and Chiles McMahon among appointees. State figures show fewer than a dozen counties have submitted assessments and active work may wait two weeks.

Claim Fraud In Suit Over 15000 Injury In Freeport

Gillogly of Mt Carroll sues Firestone Kerehner and Buahnell of Freeport for damages claiming a failed wrist reduction and permanent injury. Doctors for defendants contend the claim is extortion or a second injury after treatment.
