Press Dispatches report the burial of a murdered man named well Pulford and associate in Savana. Authorities continue investigation into the crime, detailing funeral attendees and the suspect timeline.
Ex representative Daniel Berry was shot dead at the Opera House Block in Savanna. A coroner’s verdict named an unknown shooter. Rumors point to druggist Bothwell Pulford, Berry’s landlord, amid gossip about Berry’s wife, but authorities say there is no evidence against him or anyone else. Mrs Pulford, formerly Lucinda Wylie of Galena, is described in detail.
The Board of Education met Tuesday evening in the Council Chamber. The committee on teachers reported and was approved. Incumbents elected earlier were reappointed to their current posts. Harriet Obeye replaces Ida Reed as teacher at the Seminary School, Reed having resigned.
The Local Improvement act becomes law without gubernatorial signature. It allows city boards in towns under 50,000 to authorize water and sewer projects without frontage owner consent. Boards may use special assessments or general taxation and set contract terms themselves, potentially spurring widespread improvements statewide.
The grand jury concluded its two and a half day labors at noon and returned indictments against Robert Beil for assault with intent to commit murder Ray Seaman Nora for burglary and larceny Walter Collier Nora for burglary and larceny Garfield Winters for petit larceny Beil pleaded not guilty and attorney J M Nack was appointed Winters a youth who took a piece of jewelry from Mrs Abe Bell’s residence was fined ten dollars and jailed for one day Circuit court adjourned by Judge Heard to reconvene next Monday.
At a Tuesday street committee meeting in the Council Chamber members recommended brick paving for Main Street. The Tribune supports brick as cheaper long term than macadam. Mayor J. H. Billingsley noted brick lasts ten to thirteen years without repairs and mentioned local mine interests.
The Curry-Howard group arrived in Gale na from Savanna by Burlington special car on Wednesday and will perform a noon street parade followed by a canvas show on a vacant lot near the Park hotel this evening. The troupe, praised by observers, features top blackface artists with a satisfaction or money refunded guarantee.
A public reception by the Ladies Auxiliary of the Y M C A was held Tuesday evening in the building. Decorations, musical numbers by Mrs. Barrett, Mrs. Banmie and others, and readings by Miss Avery and Rev. Matlack pleased about 150 attendees.

Smith Paralysis caused his passing He was son of late Major General J B Smith of Galena and spent boyhood there He entered West Point and commanded the 18th Infantry as colonel at the start of the Spanish American War He served in the Philippines Survived by two sons Dr W Alder Smith and W Kirby Smith Funeral plans undetermined whether burial will be in Galena or Buffalo.
The Street Committee of Galena Illinois invites bids until May 27 for a vitrified brick crossing at the corner of Spring and Beach streets and for macadamizing part of Spring street. Mr and Mrs Ralph Hilliary of New Digging were in the city on Wednesday for a brief visit. The couple attended local events and greeted friends during their stay.

August W. Machen pleaded guilty to conspiracy with Crawford and Lorenz in buying letter carrier satchels and was sentenced to an additional two years in prison. The plea was entered on the record in Washigton on May 24.

Mrs. Joseph Bale and her son called in Council Hill on Saturday. The Union Quarterly meeting drew a large attendance. Farmers are pleased with the weather as they hurry to harvest corn. A light frost Monday night caused no damage. Contractor Simons began work on Agent Parkins new residence with two men. Charles Cragg of Croton Ontario visits W. R. Bierce. James Welsh visits Freeport and may spend summer there. Bert Farrell of St Louis spent a week with her father. James Welsh returns home Saturday. G E Welsh of Chicago Til visits W. R. Bierce Sunday.
