Miner Dies Falling 85 Feet at Thanton and Cresent Mine
William Schlamp a 21 year old miner from Lansing Iowa died after falling head first down the 85 foot shaft at the Thanton and Cresent mine five miles southwest of Shullsburg. Observers could not prevent the accident which occurred as workers prepared to descend for the day. Schlamp who was unmarried and recently moved to Schullsburg is survived by his elderly parents. His body was prepared for burial and sent to Lansing.

Security Mining and Milwaukee and Highland work two shifts sinking an incline shaft to be finished in 40 days. Joplin reports Ninety dollars a ton for lead in a single bin as a strong price in a waning market. Lead sold mostly 86 to 88 per ton with some buyers at 81. Zinc ore high at 50 per ton paid Thursday, with weaker market Friday and Saturday. Zinc basis 44 to 47 per ton of 60 percent zinc. Only two companies competed for zinc. one dropped out by Friday noon and the other by Friday evening. Other offerings 1 to 2 lower. Purchases very light. most ore shipped two weeks prior. The Bell Overall company of Dubuque has rented the Weirich rooms above the Leadmine restaurant as a location for a new factory. About 100 machines will be installed and 75 to 100 workers hired. A 65 year old man arrested in Dubuque on burglary and larceny charges was brought to Galena for trial. He failed to post a $300 bond and was held for the November term after a preliminary hearing before Justice Clark. Ban on Habit Drugs Proposed by Illinois Druggists
President Hosmer C Porter of the Illinois Druggists Association says a drastic law to ban all habit forming drugs will be pressed in the next legislature. The measure would prohibit sale of narcotics with penalties including a $50 fine for first offense and six months in jail plus license forfeiture for second violation.
