Examinations yield few volunteers and wages of about 60 dollars monthly, plus carriers must supply a team and stabling year round. Marshal Whippo continues dog tax collection in the city. About fifty dogs were taxed yesterday though several remain uncollected. Each taxed dog receives a brass D. T. 1906 tag, indicating dog tax status and year. Some owners object to paying the assessed tax.

At a Monday meeting of the local Y M C A board, David Johnson's resignation as assistant secretary was accepted. A replacement will be appointed soon. Johnson will leave Friday for Galesburg New Jersey to become assistant secretary of that Y M C A. The board noted the association is thriving with a large membership.
The death of Mrs Frank Heillmeyer of Shullsburg was announced this morning after weeks of illness. A former resident of this city she was about 60 and leaves a large family. Her sister Mrs Philip Mullman of St Louis was with her at the end. Funeral arrangements will be announced Friday.
Yesterday drilling started on Patrick McDonald land owned by Pacific Gold Mining company. The firm controls about four hundred acres including James and Patrick McDonald farms and Reinecke farm. Some drilling has already shown promising results on James McDonald land, with plans to install mining machinery on an old shaft at Reinecke land.
Chas Luke, formerly of New Diggings, dies in Yuma Arizona after heat exposure. He was about 44, worked in mines near Yuma, and had lived in California for years. Survived by mother Mrs Amelia Luke of New Diggings and siblings Merryweather William Samuel and John. Remains buried in Yuma.
Two men in tailored black suits wearing costly rings called at Joseph Bogardus’s Linn Street home in Janesville to beg for food. They appeared well bred, were about 35, smooth shaven, one 175 pounds and the other shorter and heavier, and were last seen running down South Street after leaving bread and meat.
In a rifle match at the local range, Company M of Galena was defeated by Company K of Rockford by 52 points. The Rockford team included a trick shooter from a circus and an expert clay pigeon shooter, and after the contest the teams returned to town for an armory dance.
Williams McWilliams of Vinegar Hill told reporters in the city he has struck a rich black jack vein on his farm nearby. The ore is said to be in paying quantities, and a company may be formed to prove the prospect. The site is a good lead about five miles from the city. Also note: Helm the grover seeks a strong boy to drive a delivery wagon.
A large Jonas family reunion took place at Patseyville camp on the Mississippi. All living members gathered for the first time in a decade, sharing a cheerful day with Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Jonas and relatives from Denver, Winona, and local areas.
Thousands flock to New York to greet the statesman Bryan as trains bring crowds to the city for the big demonstration. A carload of Big Jo flour arrives, touted as the best on the market, per John Cloran.
William Southcott of Council Hill traveled three months visiting Colorado cities. He rode the Illinois Central to Omaha then Burlington, met his cousin in Denver during the Elks encampment parade with fifty bands, and toured Central City Leadville Boulder Idaho Springs Georgetown Silver Plume Pueblo and more. He praised Boulder as one of the most beautiful cities with fine schools churches and abundant fruit and vegetables.
Platteville man Ployd Frazier and Galena resident Miss Lizzie Glick were wed this afternoon in Sheriff Whitnore’s office at the county courthouse officiated by Justice Clark. The couple, after arriving by Northwestern train, proceeded to the sheriff’s office for the ceremony and plan to reside in Platteville.
