A trembling handwritten letter from an unidentified man, posted in Warrensburg Illinois, returns five dollars he allegedly took from Jo Daviess County years ago. Treasurer Gann filed the money as received from a christain five dollars and did not obtain the writer’s name or any explanation of how the funds were obtained.
A Warrensburg misive from many years ago with five dollars, a return address unused, arrives in the city via plain envelope. The writer, a confessed Christian, asks guidance on whether to keep or return the money, noting the county funds were taken long ago and expressing a wish to be “square with the world” before passing on. Mr. Gann received the letter this morning.
The Tribune piano contest extends three more weeks with leaders close. New entrants are encouraged to join for a chance at a $200 piano. Voting is safeguarded by certificates, a ballot box, and a contest committee.
A official notes this marks the first instance money has been returned to the county in this manner. The speaker was greatly surprised by the development and stated it could set an important precedent.
Milk inspectors under the Pure Food commission visited Galena to test local milk. No report has been received. samples were taken days ago and shipped to a Chicago lab. Officials believe the milk is pure, although earlier cases found adulteration and led to prosecutions and hefty fines.
Lightning hit John Tobin’s Guilford township home Saturday night burning wallpaper and causing wall damage but injuring no one. A nearby Rice township strike on William Mougin’s house followed a damaged telephone pole, tearing a weather board and plaster. Crews reported trees struck but no major losses.
Farmers report a mysterious hog disease spreading for weeks not cholera or known illness. Hogs first feel dizziness then go blind within days and die two days later amid suffering. General Von Lararki acting military governor of Warsaw was shot and killed in a city cab at 2 PM. The assassin escaped. Earlier an unknown man warned the cabman not to pick up any generals. Great excitement spread through the city.
Plans and specifications for the Carnegie Felt library have been received and can be viewed at the Felt estate office or W A Telford residence. The foundation must be completed by November 1 and the entire structure ready for occupancy by September 1, 1907. The building, 60 by 80 feet with basement, will feature stone construction options and an alcove interior layout. Contracts to be let September 15 with bids from known contractors. A separate note mentions Ringling's circus in Dubuque on September 3 with excursion tickets, a Galena train at 6 p.m., and a Wanted ad for a delivery wagon driver.
In Fairplay Wisconsin a long running feud between two miners May and Richards erupted in a saloon Friday night. They fought bare knuckles until exhaustion, both coating each other in injuries. Their dispute stretches back years with witnesses forming a makeshift ring as onlookers left in panic. May was carried home severely battered, Richards also injured with swollen eyes and facial cuts. The event follows a prior clash in Louisburg during a dance when ticket sales sparked the first fight. Both men, though hurt, are said to be law abiding and industrious.
Orangeville man elected president as Lena Camp meeting association announces officers. Geo B Wagner of Orangeville named president with I W Parkinson Stockton as first vice president and Rev y W Schling Pearl City as second vice president.
After days near 100 degrees the thermometer fell to under 50 Sunday night. Lowland residents reported a touch of frost in places but no damage occurred. Early fears of a severe frost eased as temperatures warmed, and the danger passed for now.
Sophia Gruetzmacher Mueller, age 73, a long time Galena resident and German immigrant of 1852, died suddenly Sunday night after a second paralytic episode. Her husband Jacob Mueller survives. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at the home with Rev. Pilz officiating. Also notices: demand for machine workers at Dallmine Cuba City and a local shop advertises sliced boiled ham at Coatsworth's.
Members of Company M and Company K engage in a rifle contest at a range near Portage. Company K from Rockford arrived Sunday evening and stayed the night, with about fifty people in attendance including three busloads and several carriages. The day is cool and clear and shooting proceeds without interference.
Mrs L H Weber of near Bellevue is hospitalized after a horse knee struck her as she moved cattle in her stable. The fall broke a limb and occurred about three miles north of Bellevue at dusk yesterday.
