The city votes for mayor with Judge Dunne widely expected to win amid a nationwide focus on municipal ownership of street railways. Republicans show apathy toward nominee John Maynard Harlan as Dunne leads by a predicted 25,000 plurality.
A severe storm yesterday struck a barn owned by Frank Gronner at the head of Spring street. Lightning caused extensive damage to the structure and killed a valuable cow inside. Gronner’s property is insured.
A parade of local residents and visitors from Dubuque to Rockford, Chicago, and Council Hill appears in a community notes column. Mentions include Attorney J C O Neill in Dubuque, Mrs. Flynn in danger, Rev Crissman in Hazel Green, Clyde McCord in the city, and numerous short visits and relocations across Dubuque, Freeport, Montfort, Council Hill, Denison, and Galena.
Henry Buchdale and Linnie Rollins of Platteville were married by Rev. Crissman Monday at 2 PM. The couple have long resided in Platteville and many friends extend best wishes.
Archbishop Keane presides at the DuBuque diocese triennial synod held in the Cathedral and the parochial school auditorium. A high mass opens at 9 o'clock as priests from across the diocese attend a one day meeting to discuss diocesan affairs and priestly interests.

City Clerk G H Tandy of Freeport died suddenly from congestive lung failure after living alone for years. Louis Saenger, longtime Freeport resident and 1848 German revolutionary exile, died after a month long illness. T H Rhodes, Savanna native, died at the Soldiers Home in Quincy. about seventy and Civil War veteran. Christina Flink of Mt Carroll died at home. Carrie Lungwitz of Dubuque died suddenly, believed caused by grief for her recently dead son.
Capt George Schneider and family prepare to relocate to their new Spring Street residence. Mr Win Smith, purchaser of the Schneider property, will move in immediately after the Schneiders depart.
Patrick D Levins a former resident of this county and son of Mrs Matthew Levins of the East Side died at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque Monday afternoon about 2 30 o'clock after a few days illness pneumonia was the cause He was born in East Galena township in Glen Hollow in 1865 and worked for the Union Electric Company in Dubuque from 1893 until death He married Elizabeth Callahan on October 24 1893 and had one child Agnes Kathleen who died in infancy in 1895 Mrs Levins died May 19 1896 He is survived by his mother two sisters Miss Ellen and Mrs William Branigan and brothers John in this county and Frank of LeMars Funeral at St Michaels Catholic Church with interment in the Catholic cemetery East Side
At Hanover Station last night vandals attacked with stones. Brakeman Smith was hit on a northbound Burlington train causing a minor injury. A second attack struck brakeman Goodhue in the cupola window, leaving him severely injured and possibly blind in both eyes. Three men seen near the switch are suspected fishermen.
Senator Beveridge criticizes an opponent for hair splitting. He likens the argument to a young lady who defends female reticence and asserts that secrecy fails not by the woman but by those she tells.
Local Galena traders advertise for four good roaster men at Shullsburg Wisconsin with immediate call. Also notes Webb City miners arriving to work at the New Deal mine near Benton. Town election dulls business. bars closed. time card changes on C B and Q railroad with freight train now at 6 18 AM to Chicago.
Two nocturnal prowlers tried skeleton keys on the front door of George Beil near the Galena gas works. Mrs. Beil screamed for help and the thieves fled. Mr. Beil, employed at the gas plant, arrived as the suspects escaped. Officers Hurst and Budden searched the area but found no one.
Rich Strike The Frontier Mining Company in Benton Wisconsin reports a promising find of ros in black jack ore. Superintendent F Bremmerman notes increasing quality as the lode develops, while John O Spahr of Indianapolis watches the mill erection at the Rewey mine with expectations of strong results.
Election of township officers takes place today in the county. East Galena shows little interest with no contests. West Galena features two races: Assistant supervisor and highway commissioner. Candidates are George W. Marfield Democrat versus John Reed Republican for assistant supervisor and James McDonald Democrat versus August Kasten Republican for highway commissioner.
The Irish Independent, Ireland’s morning paper formerly priced at a penny, is issued for the first time at a half penny starting January 2. The change marks a notable reduction in cost for readers.
