Fulton County Exemption Board nears finish of draft work

Fulton County draft officials report nearing end of processing for the 1918 draft. Of 142 men examined, 46 were exempted, 43 certified for service, and 119 called to the local board as subject to call. The first 30 percent will depart to Chillicothe in the coming days, led by Otto Funkhouser and Robert Bissonette as sergeants, with subsequent increments following on a fixed schedule.

Fatal Auto Crash Kills Farmer and Five Children

In York township, 40 year old Frank Gineman died when his car veered into an eight foot ditch near Center. His wife and five children survived with a broken arm to one girl. The wreck was towed to the Wauseon Garage. Funeral services were held at St Caspar’s Church with interment in St Caspar’s Cemetery. The community extends sympathy to Mrs Gineman and her children.

Books For The Soldiers War Library Drive In Wauseon

The Wauseon Public Library will collect donated books and magazines for army camps. Books should be in good condition with large print and focus on war, travel, history, biographies, adventure, and detective stories. Readers may mail magazines directly to camps with a one cent stamp. Local meat market ads accompany the notice.

Marathon Run by Willys Salesman Heads West

John A. Karlsen a Minneapolis St Paul Willys Overland salesman, winner of a sales contest, begins a 628 mile marathon from Minneapolis to Toledo with stops including Wauser and Kendalville as he attends the Willys Overland Sales Congress in Toledo. He is noted as a record holding athlete and plans a Great Lakes cruise starting September 4.

Defenders of Democracy Rally in Fulton County

A wartime civic gathering in Fulton County featured a banquet in Wauseon with rain delaying a Knights of Pythias ball game. Archbold supplied music and volunteers, while Mayor Boy and Mulholland of Toledo delivered patriotic addresses supporting the war and democratic ideals. Comrades and editors attended, and Red Cross workers distributed care items to enlisted men.
