A head on collision three miles east of Emporia Kansas involving the fast mail and the Mexico and California express caused boilers to explode and a wreck hole into which cars and engines plunged. Ten or more dead and many injured. W J Bryan aided victims and rescued survivors. Names of the dead and injured listed, with several clerks missing.
A west bound express collided with the fast mail near Lang Emporia, causing 12 serious injuries including Holliday, Etter, Dagan, and Butler among others. Eight cars of the California express were damaged while passengers suffered fractures and bruises. An orders miscommunication led to the wreck as the east bound fast mail and California express failed to pass correctly. In a separate Carolina crime, Henrietty Sullivan was killed in Columbia by two women amid a jealous motive.
President Andrews of Brown university informed the corporation that he will not withdraw his resignation and stated his decision to depart the university. The note was sent on September 9 from Providence.
Chicago reports that Lieutenant Squier's synchronograph for dispatches shows progress with punctured paper ribbon transmission. The system covers writing and sending only. speeding puncturing and translating at the receiving end remains unaddressed, requiring labor at both ends. Full utilization awaits a high speed preparer and translator to accelerate message flow.
Chicago civil service commissioners plan to resign when Mayor Harrison returns, ending a clash with Democratic leaders after bribery and unfair marking charges tied to Henry Leutzenkirchen. Leutzenkirchen refused to answer, was dismissed, and the board sought to spare the mayor embarrassment with unified resignations. The mayor remains neutral.
Southern Pacific express No. 17 from San Francisco to Los Angeles was held at a switch near Morrano California last night. Robbers piled ten ties on the track and set them aflame. Five shots were fired at trainmen. a tramp on the baggage car was wounded in the hip. Two deputy sheriffs attempted to return fire before the robbers fled toward the San Joaquin river. A posse formed at Ripon to pursue them.
In Chicago there were major league results with Cleveland sweeping Washington in the deris and Boston romping St Louis while Brooklyn beat Cincinnati and Philadelphia edged Chicago. Western leagues show Milwaukee and Columbus tallies as well. In Biloxi three yellow fever cases and three suspects were isolated with calls to raise the quarantine for relief. Surgeon General Weyman reported improved southern yellow fever conditions to the treasury secretary.
Indianapolis September 9 the sixteenth national encampment of the Sons of Veterans opened with an informal reception at the Denison House. The city is decorated for visitors and a large attendance is expected. Commander-in-Chief Lake of Reading PA and his staff arrived and were welcomed. The Ladies Aid Society is represented by national officers. Both groups hold an executive session at the capitol today, continuing through Saturday.
Acting Postmaster General Heth conferred with the attorney general on how to handle officers who refuse to vacate or accept transfers under civil service rules. The attorney general urged sending the matter and papers to U S district attorneys and their deputies for action. Three men die after train collision near Rome New York with a third member gravely hurt. Total ore shipments to Sept 1 from Duluth Superior and Western dock reach 472000 tons all from the Mesaba range.
The inter state miners convention adjourned without a vote on the proposed settlement of the strike amid doubt that a majority will accept it. Indiana appears to hold the balance of power as Illinois and Pittsburgh districts lean against the measure, while Ohio and West Virginia break about sides.

A secret conference outlined the plan and it will be brought to the Columbus convention for adoption.
Washington reports the Navy Department will oppose creating a government armor plate plant. A special board will present data to Secretary Long, arguing against state manufacture and asserting $400 per ton is profitable for private firms, with the government saving money by purchasing armor rather than producing it itself.
Spring Valley September 9 The Corona Italian society at add has offered a reward of $135 for the capture and conviction of the murderer of Michael Vicilli who was murdered at that place one night last week by an unknown assailant. Police up to date have no clue to the identity of the man who committed the deed.
