Miners Split Over Wages Amid Columbus Talk

Massillon O Sept 8 President Ratchford heads to Columbus for a miners convention and urges acceptance of a 69 cent rate compromise, arguing it will yield gains totaling nearly 9 million across several states. Pittsburg delegates to Columbus restrained, while Dolan leads calls to press for the higher rate amid threats of secession and hunger-driven action.

Settlement Reached In Dubois Miners Strike

Settlement of the Dubois area miners strike was signed after talks with General Manager Robinson. Miners at company collieries will vote today on the proposal, with resumption expected on the 8th. The plan grants a committee access to price data and the company will pay the highest rate in any competitive region. 6,000 miners and 1,000 railroad workers could return to work.

Miners Face Severe Strikes and Contempt Petition

In Pittsburg on Sept 8 the court planned a second hearing on a contempt petition against Patrick Dolan and miners officials. Striking workers from Westmoreland, Penn Gas, and river crews abandoned camps after accepting 65 cents, while Hermince miners at 62 cents faced near starvation. Berwind White closed mines, shuttling workers to Clearfield as pits were fenced and emptied. Shaft No 4 at Sewickley showed unrest with 65 cent wages. river miners forced the closure and pasture of mules. The overall plight leaves miners with no pay and dwindling funds while seeking old rates.
