Key West May 6 Special. The French liner Lafayette sailing April 23 from Corunna with many male passengers was captured near Havana by the Annapolis, Wilmington, Newport and Morrill. On guard, she is sent to Key West, raising suspicions of Spanish recruits and signaling a potential international dispute over her detention and armament. Deployment of U S troops abroad is anticipated amid war news.
May 6 dispatches report regiments ordered to ship surplus baggage home and keep only field equipment ready. The Twenty-fifth began special trains to Tampa as seven transports await troops. Uncertainty surrounds sailing time and no naval battle indications have been received. Firing was heard at sea near Cuarnestown, with no vessels sighted.

In San Juan, officials expect the United States fleet to seize Porto Rico on the morrow. A cabinet officer indicated important news may come from the island on Sunday, with administration circles watching developments closely.
May 6 Wassatox The seizure of the French liner La Fayette caused strong official reaction. The state department calls the vessel a blockade runner and a lawful prize. The French ambassador declined comment while signaling an imminent protest. Embassy officials say she sailed from a French port before the war and stopped at Havana to coal before heading to Vera Cruz.
New York May 6 Special 1 A Key West reports the capture of the French liner La fayette while attempting to run the Havana blockade. It is alleged the Lafayette had been warned by the blockading squadron not to enter Havana harbor.
A Kingston special reports four American warships spotted off Porto de Banes Cuba. They are believed to be part of Sampson's fleet. The sighting comes as tensions rise in Cuban waters and crews monitor movements near Guantanamo Bay.
A Shanghai special reports Admiral Dewey after destroying the Spanish fleet and Cavite fort bombarded Manila, setting the city on fire and causing great loss of life.
The Washington Tribune reports Sampson has been instructed to send warships immediately to the relief of Americans residing at Navassa Island. Wastingatox, May 6. Special. The dispatch notes top command decisions and imminent aid for distressed settlers.
May 6 report from Washington notes Theodore Roosevelt sworn as Lieutenant Colonel the first volunteer officer. Fighting Joe Wheeler takes oath as Major General of volunteers as first ex Confederates commissioned. Fitzhugh Lee is later sworn in while Lee’s Long tells AP no information on Dewy operations.
Special report states the volunteer army will consist of seven corps each commanded by a major general. Rendezvous sites are likely Fort Myer Virginia Atlanta Chickamauga Richmond and Long Island for the initial assembling of troops.
