Dewey's Ships Escape Damage in Manila Victory

Washington May 7 Special. The long awaited message from Admiral Dewey announcing the destruction of the Spanish fleet at Manila was received and celebrated. Dewey reports silencing batteries, taking Cavite fortifications, capturing Manila and Cavite, with 256 wounded Spaniards as prisoners. Spanish losses were heavy. none of Dewey's ships were harmed and few men injured. The City of Pekin to transport troops to Dewey, escorted by Charleston, is planned.
