Two American forces landed in Cuba under Washington authority. At Santa Clara and near Mariel they engaged Spanish cavalry, driving them off. Spaniards retreated with sixty wounded and sixteen dead. American and Cuban flags were raised together on Cuban soil.
In Washington on May 5 the House discussed the Hawaiian annexation resolution after approving a conference report on the Alaskan homestead act. The foreign affairs committee adjourned without action, though it is claimed a majority favors annexation.

Paris May 5 Special It is reported that the United States would cede the Canary Islands to England if she helps in case other powers intervene on behalf of Spain.
Special dispatch from Mapaiv dated May 5 reports ongoing unrest in Spain with provinces hit by disturbances, looting, and shooting incidents as authorities struggle to regain control.
New York May 6 Special dispatches report an uprising in Porto Rico with a revolutionary movement in progress. The Kingston special notes official dispatches passing through detail the revolt gaining momentum.
The Eastern Telegraph company declares no message from Commodore Dewey has been received by President McKinley or anyone else. In London Lexpos reports May 6. Also noted: Frank Black's young son is ill with pneumonia.
Chicago May 5 reports a remarkable wheat market with May at 1.50 a bushel amid light offerings. Foreign markets surged as well with Paris rising five cents per bushel despite duty removals.
San Francisco reports claim a Dewey loss of 200 men. authorities deny any such information and say no data has been received. The May 5 dispatches note indignant officials refute the telegraphed story as unfounded.
Washington reports fear Dewey is bottled up in Manila harbor with mines guarding the entrance. Officials worry he has not yet reported to Washington and may avoid leaving to preserve strength. Elsewhere Madrid seeks aid to quell riots in Porto Rico and Barcelona sees a bank run while grain and potato exports are blocked.
