United States Forces Fight Rebels at Manila Pasig Action

Manila March 18. General Wheaton’s forces attacked and captured Pasig east of Manila after an hourlong stand by rebels. Filipino losses reported 80 killed and 16 captured. six American troops wounded. Wheaton’s brigade pressed toward Guadalupe and Pasig city, aided by river gunboats and heavy artillery. Rain hindered operations as the gunboat line supported the assault. By 11:30 a.m. contact renewed, Americans drove rebels from Pasig with decisive fire, signaling a major engagement in the area.

President to rest in Thomasville Georgia for weeks

Otis cabled from Manila that six deaths have occurred since March 5. The president will travel to Thomasville Georgia for two to three weeks of rest and recuperation, leaving Washington at 6:40 p.m. Brooke reports Private Ole Lundstrom of Camp Columbia died March 11 from typhoid. Secretary Long received Admiral Sampson's letter urging immediate reappointment of officers for gallantry off Santiago, omitting his own name.

Maple Leaf Plans Rockford Branch Line Expansion

President Stickney of the Great Western road has visited Rockford incognito and the company has purchased land in South Rockford. It is understood Maple Leaf will build a branch into Rockford this season to tap heavy freight traffic.

Wealthy Hanover resident dies at home after funeral

John Eadie, a rich Hanover resident and native of Ireland, collapsed and died from heart disease at his residence in Gallena after returning from his sister's funeral. He had lived in Jo Daviess county since 1839.

Dover Delaware report states the general assembly has adjourned without electing a U S senator. The election will go over until 1901 unless a special session is convened to choose one. The item notes big money savings by using Gas House Coke.
