Manila dispatch reports Wheaton's column advancing beyond the Pasig to Laguna de Bay sweeping insurgent positions. American forces seized the Pasig line, captured two improvised gunboats, and inflicted heavy insurgent losses while suffering light U.S. casualties. Pope in Rome remains critically ill but deemed not serious by physicians.
Savannah March 14 special train bearing the president and party to the Pine regions of Georgia left after ten this morning and will reach Thomasville at four this afternoon. Also notes appellate court ruling on war revenue stamps and cabinet advice to ratify peace treaty.

Warrick, Collector J. J. Aurand, and Commissioner of Highways Samuel Bollinger. Homer Niles, former Stephenson county treasurer, bought a half interest in the Chicago Street fish and meat market of Alex Grier. both men are described as popular and reliable and expected to run a solid business.
Governor John R. Tanner designates Arbor Day for Friday April 21 1899 urging general observance across Illinois. Proclamation calls for planting trees shrubs and vines around homes highways and schools to beautify and improve wealth and health of the state and to ensure treeless schoolyards do not exist by century's end.

The Oregon dam near Oregon City suffered a central break on Sunday night as ice and high water moved downstream. Despite a rising fear, the dam withstood the test until late evening when thicker north ice caused piling pressure, tearing out about 200 feet of the center.
