Shafter’s armistice extended to Saturday noon to allow Linares to communicate with Blanco and Madrid.
New York dispatch reports Naval Architect Hobson explaining why the Merrimac could not be sunk directly across the channel. He cites a shot-away rudder that left the vessel unmanageable near Santiago.

Boston July 8 Special Halifax arrived with 162 survivors of the ill fated La Bourgogne. The passenger list shows 714 aboard at the time of the accident with 5650 lost and 164 saved. Among the rescued are 12 second class 47 steerage passengers and 105 crew members.
Cmpaco Illinois shows afternoon showers in the central and western portions with heavy activity into tonight in the extreme south. Saturday is forecast to be fair with variable winds. In Pecartonica Illinois a tragic incident is noted as a blind horse leaped from a bridge after spooking at a buggy, nearly pulling its owner into the river before rescue on the second attempt.
Bound for the Arctic, Lieutenant Peary arrived at Sydney Cape Breton en route to his Arctic expedition. The special dispatch notes his travel as part of the voyage toward exploration in the Arctic regions.
Dr. F. H. Matter is at Orangeville. Paul Bickenbach has gone to Austoria on business. Miss Tillie Musser has gone to Omaha to spend a month. Miss Mary Wheeler has returned from a visit at Seales Mound. James D. Williams of Chicago is calling on Freeport friends today. Mrs. Geo. Schmidt and son Clarence have returned from a visit at Winslow. Patrick Horan has returned after a four months visit at his old home in Ireland. Fred Burbank of Clinton Iowa is the guest of his parents. Mrs. C. P. West of Chicago is visiting at the home of her mother. Mrs. Fred Wagner has gone to Aurora to attend the Woman's Missionary convention. Mrs. Will Renner and son are guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller. Division Superintendent Collins and Assistant General Superintendent Goodnow of the St. Paul road were here over night. Fred Kingsley and son of Minden Neb. are guests of Dr. and Mrs. Geo. P. Kingsley. Joe Linder Will Kape Terman Zanoni and Chas. Gable went to Pearl City last night to attend a party. Mrs. W. F.C. Willett and children of Chicago are here to spend a few weeks with her parents. Mrs. Alice Lathrop Scott has arrived from Buffalo to spend the summer with her parents. Miss Bessie Hampst of Philadelphia, visiting, left for St. Paul to visit before returning home. Medicine note ends with Rocky Mountain Tea advertisement.
H B Smith the Standard Oil plant manager in Freeport takes over the Freeport nine and reorganizes the squad into a strong western team. He plans two weekly games with top clubs and Dixon will play here Sunday. Householder and Baby Crippen switch catching, Bowley and Sample handle pitching with Gibe at first and Wisner at second. Babbitt at short, Behl Lohr Bowley and Sample in the outfield. Also notes Trinity church preaching tonight and Knights of the Maccabees review tonight.

The past week averaged 1 to 4 degrees above normal across the state with little rainfall.
