The silver majority moves to form a temporary convention organization to their liking. Illinois honest money Democrats opened their national headquarters with Comptroller Eckles and delegates from about twenty towns vowing to oppose Gov. Altgeld on the floor of the convention.
In Philadelphia Judge Yerkes ruled against James B. Gentry after a new trial motion in the Madge York murder case. Gentry was sentenced to be hanged as spectators and the courtroom watched his reaction with tears as the death sentence was read.
In Cleveland Ohio July 3 melee at Brown Hoist works flared yesterday leaving one dead. Militia ordered to keep the peace with two companies quartered downtown under rush orders as tensions mount and a single aggressive move could spark renewed bloodshed.
Bay City Michigan July 3 Eight hundred workers at Wheeler and Co ship yards went on strike over a union member leaving and not returning to work. The action disrupts yard operations and reflects internal union disputes.

A large Freeport Republican meeting reorganized The Hill Republican Club electing permanent officers including President Dr J F Fair and Secretary W H Foll with an 18 plus canvass for members. A drum corps and marching club were planned with lanterns and a campaign lantern invention showcased for night parades.
Prof. J E McGilvrey principal of Freeport high school has been offered the assistant professor chair in the Chicago university pedagogy department and state examiner for the accredited list. President Harper made the offer with a higher salary. The Freeport Board of Education will act tonight on releasing him from his contract. He would accept if released with regret for his service this year. He will spend his vacation aiding in the Stephenson county normal summer school. Geo E DeForest of Minneapolis will arrive tonight to spend the Fourth with family.
