A St Petersburg dispatch reports Count Tolstoi the Russian novelist and reformer dying on his deathbed in Stockholm on January 29. The note from Stockholm cites Tolstoi’s advanced illness and possible imminent death, reflecting the veteran writer’s long struggle with illness and social reform efforts.
John Denes a traveling freight agent aged 38 was chosen as the tenth juror in the Thaw trial this morning. Two jurors were excused later in the day with reasons not disclosed as the panel neared a full jury before adjournment.
Springfield HL Jan 29 Special The House suspended rules to consider a resolution by Representative Hernby Democrat calling for an investigation of the state treasurer s office. The inquiry would determine if state funds were deposited for interest and if the treasurer or his bondsmen have other banking interests, with Pattison Hernby Donoghue Lertz supporting and Allen opposing.
London January 29 Special. The Associated Press reports the Kingston incident has been formally closed as Governor Swettenham withdraws his letter to Admiral Davis and apologizes for writing it.
In Washington on January 29 the house in committee of the whole adopted the agriculture bill amendment to continue the free distribution of seeds a practice that has persisted for several years.

Daniel Henry Dawson a long time Illinois Central conductor on the Freeport Dubuque divisions died at his Williams street home after an extended illness of pleurisy He was born October 5 1858 in Palmer Massachusetts and came to Freeport twenty years ago He served the railroad many years and planned to take the Dodgeville run after recovery He leaves a widow stepsons and stepdaughters and was active in fraternal orders including the O R C M W A K C and Foresters The funeral is set for St Marys church with Rev Croke officiating. several relatives are noted among attendees
Mrs Robert Jones of this city dies at 11 30 am after a ten week illness. Born Catherine Trumpe February 9 1852 in New Orleans Green County Wisconsin she lived in Clarno until moving here two years ago. Survived by husband three children and extended family. Funeral Thursday 11 am at 318 Union street with ministers Heinmiller and Rilling. Burial at Zion City.
George J. Dehn sold the Freeport Plumbing and Heating company to Chas. E. Evans and Simon Hoefer who will move operations from 44 Stephenson street to Dehn’s former site at 4 Stephenson street. Dehn exits after seven years to pursue contract work on inventions with a Chicago firm and will stay in Freeport for now. Evans and Hoefer are well known locally and expected to retain public patronage.
The Elgin and Belvidere Electric company announces the formal opening of the new Elgin to Belvidere line for Saturday February 2. Regular schedule starting, with through cars to connect Belvidere and Chicago. Through service links Freeport to Chicago via trolley, with tickets and rates available from Rockford Belvidere and Elgin agents.
Miss Tillie Drener, native of Freeport and prominent milliner, marries Sol Meyerstein of Virden Illinois in Chicago. The couple plan a honeymoon in New Orleans and Cuba before settling in Virden, with Drener previously head trimmer for Bloomfield Locher Brown in Milwaukee.
Miss Ida Johnson daughter of Mrs Aramenta Johnson of Adelbert street and Henry Spohn son of Mrs R F E Spohn of Chestnut street were married last evening at 7 30 by Rev Orlo J Price at the Baptist church parsonage. The groom from Rochester Indiana has worked for Yardy Bros in this city. The bride a estimable young lady with domestic tastes. They will reside with the bride's mother in Fast Freeport.
Miss Leah Knecht and Arthur H Hayes married on January 19 in Charleston Illinois. Knecht, formerly of Freeport and a 1904 graduate, is greeted by many friends who extend congratulations.
Washington dispatch reports an unusual honor for Hon Frank O Lowden who was asked to take the chair and preside over house deliberations for a time. The note says it is rare for a man sworn in as a member less than two months to be given such responsibility.
Mr Whiting of Hliness Life Insurance presented Mrs Blast a draft for 5000 dollars in settlement of her late husband George F Blast policy. The prompt payment of the policy is praised as commendable.
The fourth annual ball and card party by the Freeport Police Department is tonight in the Masonic temple. Officers from neighboring cities are invited and Rockford is expected to send many guests. Tickets admit a lady and gentleman. two ladies require an extra charge for a third person. Gibler's orchestra will play as prizes are awarded in card games.

Journeymen Barbers' union held a banquet for Boss Barbers' members at the Troy cafe parlors last evening. Members spoke on union topics while Frank J. Glenn, president of the Trades and Labor council, gave an engaging talk on Unionism. Card games and seven up were played, with favors awarded to Charles.
