Edward Harriman, before the Navy Commerce Commission, was asked if the public was told Alton common stock could pay a dividend. He replied by asking whether such a statement was ever made. The assault and battery case brought by Simon Weinand against his father in law Herman Meiers and his son was dismissed this morning by Magistrate Bentley in the police court. Weinand did not appear against his relatives, sending word from Globe hospital that he has reconsidered and will not prosecute. He remains in hospital but is reported much improved and hopes to leave in a few days.
New Orleans February 25 President Harahan announced Illinois Central contemplates improvements worth many millions. The railroad will buy 3,600 freight cars at 4,200,000 dollars and add fifty locomotives. Cars to be finished by November and engines by October.
Fire department responded at 9 30 last evening to extinguish a small blaze at the Cronkrite property occupied by the Gray family at the corner of Clark avenue and Cherry street. The fire started from a defective chimney and burned a few shingles before being contained with no further damage.

August Jung Sr a Ridott township pioneer farmer for over four decades died Monday evening at age 68 in Freeport at his daughter Mrs Frank Rummelhagen’s home on Chestnut street He was born in Germany August 1 1839 and came to America in 1863 later settling in Ridott He is survived by his second wife Mrs August Kasten and children including Mrs Conrad Keller Mrs William Kruckenberg Mrs Frank Rummelhagen Miss Sophia Jung Miss Annie Jung August Jung and William Jung plus two brothers Joseph and Henry Funeral services set for Thursday at 1 pm at Rummelhagen and 2 pm at St Johns church with interment in the city cemetery Also reported James Frederick Metz died at St Francis hospital after an operation for a leg pus infection He was 66 and lived on a farm six miles northwest of the city The funeral of Mrs Michael Lamm will be Wednesday at 8:30 am from the Flor ence township home and at 10 oclock at St Josephs church Interment in St Josephs cemetery

Dr Fulwilder refunded $8050 to MacGilvray, but the forged check remains with State's Attorney Burrell and the bankers association pursues conviction while Silk reports the Rockford check is valid though its chain of custody is unclear.
