New York February 26 Special Edward Harriman testified before the interstate commerce commission denying any aim to gain control through securities purchases. He said investments stemmed from Northern Pacific sales and aimed to improve income. He claimed no knowledge of the sale of ten million dollars in Alton bonds to New York Life and asserted eighty percent of the Alton bond proceeds went to stockholders as dividends.
Between 175000 and 200000 dollars disappeared from the Chicago sub-treasury last week. Authorities in Chicago and Washington are investigating the robbery as they work continuously to locate the missing notes. The bills were in denominations of 1000, 5000, and 10000 dollars.
The U S Supreme Court affirmed the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling in the Eau Claire National Bank versus Jackson trustee case. The decision held against the bank on the issue of preference in bankruptcy.

This morning Fred Dorman observed a flock of geese flying north signaling early spring. Other signs noted include several robins arriving in the past few days.
Evelyn Nesbit Thaw testified in the Thaw case denying visits with Dr. Carlton Flint and Jack Barrymore while revealing her mother received all of her money from White's letter of credit. The exchange highlighted tensions as District Attorney Jerome pressed cross examination. Thaw described the money as poison.
A bull pup named Shine awakened Mr and Mrs Wallace in Beloit letting them escape a coal gas leak. The door to the stove was open and the family, including two children, suffered illness from the fumes, with Mrs Wallace fainting and Mr Wallace losing consciousness before fresh air revived them. A Beloit exchange notes the dog’s timely warning and the doctor’s later arrival.

Dr James B Pollock, biology chair at Ann Arbor, has returned to Ann Arbor after visiting his mother in Orangeville.
The funeral of Mrs Elizabeth Schaub mother of George Schaub was held from the family residence on upper Carroll street at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon Rev N Wunderlich officiated and interment was at the city cemetery.

After a days run city cars failed again due to a serious accident at the power plant. A cylinder head blew off an engine while workers installed a new armature. The debris flew through a window into the river, but remarkably no one was seriously hurt. Water power was used for the rest of the evening and workers toiled overnight to restore steam power.
Eugene McConnell, released on burglary charges two weeks ago, is held on larceny accusations. He allegedly stole W. E. Bowker’s gold watch and chain while acting as porter at Clifton hotel, later selling the watch for six dollars. Bowker identified the charm at the station, and the watch was recovered by Assistant Chief Silk. McConnell remains jailed on burglary bonds of 500 dollars and faces presentment to the grand jury on larceny.
Mrs Leonora M Lake famed Irish orator will visit the city March 8 and 10. The Montreal Daily Herald lauds her tall figure expressive face and spellbinding delivery while Archbishop Ryan of Philadelphia extols her platform presence. She speaks Friday evening March 8 at St Marys hall on The Divine Rights of the Child and Sunday afternoon March 10 at the opera house on What is Life and What Can We Make of It Admission free.
Eastern Star, Culture club with Miss Brown, Grace church choir, and Freeport Shakespeare Society hold evening meetings this week. Freeport Commandery schedules a drill night Wednesday. R. A. M. confers B A degrees Tuesday and Thursday. St Catherine's guild meets Tuesday afternoon for special work. Donations for the Y M C A banquet are requested by Tuesday morning at the Masonic temple.
Simon Weinand, a 50 year old farm hand and foundry helper, was attacked by Herman Meyers and son and Simon Weinand was severely injured. He faces three fractured ribs a swollen eye and possible internal injuries while reporting the incident to police and seeking treatment at Globe hospital. The Meyers men, who were bonded, appeared in court as the investigation continued.
A frightened horse hitched to a spring wagon bolted at 1:10 this afternoon at South Galena avenues and Carroll street. The animal kicked the wagon to pieces and skidded along the sidewalk, scattering wreckage toward Carroll street while the coachman fled. The driver’s name is not yet known.
