Roosevelt sent a message to Congress urging urgent land reform and government control of western public lands. He called for conserving coal and other fuels on government lands and proposed grazing fees with an immediate appropriation of $500,000 to aid in detecting and preventing land frauds.
Washington Feb 13 The conferees agreed on an immigration bill amendment to exclude foreigners who use a pass permit to gain admission and hurt U S labor. The change stems from Pacific coast states demand to bar Japanese coolies and aims to ease talks between the administration and San Francisco delegates with President Roosevelt present.
In New York on February 13, the Thaw trial paused because juror Bolton’s wife is ill with pneumonia. Bolton, escorted by two court officers, left to visit his home and returned by 2 pm when the court resumed. Dr. Evans, the scientist, was recalled to the stand.
Providence February 18 Special. By 10 am the names of 1265 aboard the steamer Larchmont were known. Nineteen survived, eleven bodies identified, ninety five missing as rescue efforts continued.
Peoria Feb 13 Special The retail merchants of Illinois signified near unanimous support for municipal control and regulation of gas and electric service and rates by resolutions presented at the state convention session.
Cleveland, Feb. 18. A federal grand jury returned indictments against eight contracting firms for violating the eight hour law in connection with government work in this federal district.
New Britain Feb 13 Special. It is learned the shortage of the Savings Bank of New Britain missing treasurer William F Walker may amount to five hundred thousand dollars. The bank run continues as search continues.
New York Jan 13 special. The Western Union Telegraph Company announced a ten percent salary increase for telegraph operators in principal offices. The move affects wage scales across key hubs and reflects ongoing industry reforms.
A Los Angeles special reports twenty five people killed when a boiler exploded. The Denver dispatch notes the disaster occurred earlier and details remain developing with officials confirming casualties.
Colonel Kittelson of Moline will conduct an official inspection of Company L tomorrow night. The company will meet tonight for drill.
Group Three of the State banks completed organization in Rockford with officers elected. President John W. Waterman of Forest City National Bank leads, H. H. Antrim of Freeport is secretary treasurer. Delegates from eighty eight banks attended, with sixty represented.
