Larchmont Sinks After Collision Near Block Island

The Joy line steamer Larchmont sank off Block Island after colliding with the schooner Harry Knowlton. About 150 passengers and 30 crew were aboard. estimates suggest 15 to 20 bodies ashore and only 8 survivors. Rescue reports cite freezing or drowning as causes.

Brewers build saloons near Freeport breweries

Two Freeport breweries plan new saloons adjacent to their plants. Franz Bros has started a building. Schmid Bros reportedly will start when weather allows. Brewer ownership will cover the buildings while only Franz and Schmid beer will be sold. A former police official now in the saloon business is named to run Schmid Bros venture.

Birthday exercises mark Lincoln birth in Freeport

Schools held birthday exercises for Abraham Lincoln this morning and dismissed at noon. No public service in Freeport besides tonight's Embury church lecture. Freeport, a historic site in Lincoln's career, hosted the Lincoln Douglas debates to a large crowd, with wider observance expected in coming years.

Inquest adjourned for further investigation in Lena death

Coroner's jury probing the death of John Karburg Jr found near the Illinois Central tracks adjourned Monday afternoon. Eyewitnesses described finding a young man unconscious with a head injury and possible frost exposure, with testimony detailing the scene, timing, and train movements through Lena.

Robbed by Friend At Colvin House In Dakota Case

Orin Wolf of Dakota reported to police he was robbed of a pocketbook and contents while asleep at the Colvin house after a day with Wesley B. Salyard a Dakota barber. Salyard admitted theft after a sweat box interview and the pocketbook was found behind the Colvin house. Salyard pleaded guilty to larceny and was held to the March term on $200 bond.

Northwestern railroad plans pension for veteran official

C H Knapp assistant general freight agent of the Chicago and North Western will be placed on the pension rolls March 1 after reaching the 70 year age limit. He is the Northwestern system’s oldest employee with continuous service since 1869 when the line was Galena and Chicago Union. He will retire from many duties but continue as an advisor to the company.

Austin to Sioux City as City Ticket Agent

Fred Austin formerly night ticket agent for the Illinois Central in the local office has gone to Sioux City Iowa to accept a position as city ticket agent for the same company. For the past year he has been connected with the Chicago office and his friends in this city will be pleased to learn of his promotion.

Bloody dispute ends in assault over ashes money

John Beverly and Frank Stewart quarrelled over 40 cents of a $1 payment for hauling ashes on Adams street. Stewart attacked Beverly, injuring him severely with cuts and swelling. Beverly later swore out a warrant for assault and battery. Stewart faces charges as Beverly remains hospitalized.
