San Francisco December 31 Mrs Botkin's lawyers refuse to accept the jury verdict of guilty in the murder case and will push for a new trial or possible reversal. After arriving at the ranch county jail she sobbed and shrieked in distress. Initial ballots reportedly showed ten votes for hanging and two for life imprisonment.

Paris Guillotine Ends Jack the Ripper Figure

Paris reports that Joseph Vacher the French Jack the Ripper was guillotined at Bourghan Bresse this morning. The 29 year old condemned at the Ain October assizes protested his innocence and feigned insanity to the end. He had murdered four boys six women and girls and one elderly widow, often attacking victims tending herd.

Trappers fall 500 feet in mine shaft accident

An Ishpeming special reports nine Finnish trimmers were ascending in the Lake Superior mine shaft when the cage hit an obstruction, causing six to fall 500 feet to the bottom and die instantly. Three survivors clung to the cage and were only slightly injured.

Fire destroys Masonic Temple in Sterling Ill

Fire in Sterling Ill destroyed the Masonic Temple early today with losses topping $38,000. The total includes $11,000 on the building $8,000 on Masonic paraphernalia $800 on Sterling club furnishings and $14,000 on C E Windom’s fur and undertaking stock and fixtures. Insurance covers $7,500 on building $3,300 on Masonic property $800 on the Sterling club goods and $6,000 on Windom’s stock.
