Washington August 16 Special An authoritative note says Senator Allison of Iowa will not join the peace commission. In a long interview with President McKinley the president urged his inclusion but Allison cannot accept due to other important duties.
The notice offers dry lumber the day after rain with a large stock and good grades. It promises prompt delivery and invites customers to call and view what is available, regardless of whether they buy.
Aug. 16 dispatches from Madrid and Hong Kong confirm Manila surrender and immediate US occupation. General Jaubens assumed command as Augusti was dismissed. bombardment warned for Aug. 9, city fell Aug. 13 with Spanish officers allowed parole while judiciary and admin offices stayed with Spaniards. Insurgents remain outside the town.
The president appointed commissions to adjust evacuation of Cuba and Porto Rico. Cuba includes Major General J F Wade Rear Admiral W T Sampson Major General M C Butler. Porto Rico includes Major General J R Brooke Rear Admiral W S Schley Brigadier General W W Gordon. All but Gordon are well known.
Washington reports orders to muster out about 50,000 volunteers including all cavalry and artillery in the U S and many infantry regiments. The total may delay until dispatches from Gen. Merritt on conditions at Manila are received. Jim Corbett's father killed his wife and then shot himself, shocking Corbett who may delay training for the Buffalo bout with McCoy.
The Kynoch company of Birmingham is reported to have received an order for 10,000,000 military cartridges to be promptly delivered to the United States government.
The dutural meeting of the Bee Keeper's association continues at the court house with S H Herrick of Rockford presiding and B Kennedy of New Milford acting as secretary. This afternoon attendees heard an address by Hon N France of Platteville Wis state inspector of apiaries secretary of State Bee Keepers society and president of the Southern Wisconsin Bee Keepers' society. He is regarded as one of the best posted men on bee culture in the United States.
Dick Vail, who went to war with Company L, arrived home today on a thirty days furlough. He left the company at Porto Rico due to sickness. Will Schauer also received a furlough but stayed in South Carolina briefly because he was too weak to travel. He is the son of Chris Been of Bergman and Dorman's.
Professor Schelling, who resigned his Henney's post, has a strong offer from Watertown New York but may return to business here. Locals hope he stays as his family would leave Freeport. Ridott Boys active as Wm Hunt, Ridott township vice president of the fair, reports farmer boys training horses for running and trotting races at the fair.
Illinois Central engineer E D Palmer purchases W A.iHance corner lot at Lincoln avenue and West street for 1000 dollars and announces plans to erect a house immediately.
The Democrats of the Ninth congressional district meet here tomorrow to nominate a candidate for Congress. All interested in the nomination may participate. Also scheduled is the Van Matre family annual reunion this Thursday at Lathrop Park near Winslow with a basket picnic, speeches, music and games.
Miss Katherine Sweeney will entertain this evening in honor of the Misses Ravane and Demmel from Waterloo Iowa. The gathering will feature music and refreshments as part of the social event.
In Curiaco on Aug.16 the forecast calls for tonight showers and possible thunderstorms, followed by a partly cloudy Wednesday with showers and cooler temperatures. Brisk south to west winds are expected. A Bicycle Club meeting is scheduled for tonight with members urged to attend.
