The German cruiser Kasserine Augusta docked in Hona Kone after departing Manila last Saturday. German officers offered little information to press, noting no changes in Manila or Manila Bay as events unfold.
A London business house reports to the Westminster Gazette that Manila has fallen. The claim rests on sources with a Hong Kong agent, the report dated today from London.
Dispatches report a severe storm sweeping Illinois and Iowa with damaging wind hail and heavy rain. Apple sized hail shattered crops including corn and peaches. bridges washed out near Keokuk Fort Madison. One death in Macomb from fright. widespread damage to trees wires and cellars. reports of a cyclone near Hamilton Illinois and floods in Marion county.
Over 150 cases of prostration were treated in hospitals before 2 o clock this afternoon. Medical staff reported a high patient load and urged caution to prevent further incidents.
New York dispatch reports General Wheeler and Colonel Roosevelt leading the Rough Riders into a detention camp at Montauk Point where they will remain in quarantine for a few days. Some men are too weak to walk. In Pana Illinois two non union miners Ed Jones and Jim Palmer shot and wounded several strikers at Springdale this morning. Jones and Palmer were arrested as hundreds of strikers surrounded the jail amid great excitement.
A false rumor circulated that Samuel Graham, a farmer near Dakota, was killed after a wagon accident. A Cedarville message later said he was found in the road, revived at home with physician aid. Other items note a Thursday dance by A O C club and Walton’s Nephews updating store shelves.
Partly cloudy weather with thunderstorms in the north. This afternoon and tonight expect unsettled conditions. Tuesday should be generally fair with brisk southerly winds and continued mild temperatures.
Mr. Johnson, tasked with erecting the new opera house, is due in the city this afternoon to begin immediate preparations. Indications point to Lena hosting one of the largest camp meetings, starting next Thursday, with more tents drawn than in prior years.

Crotzer of Lena and Dr. Snyder’s Oregon trip noted. Chas. Frick visits Hazelton. Mrs Reinkerdorff guest of Wagner in Canton. Chas. Gordon back from Omaha with Iowa state band. Harrahan of Illinois Central passes through Freeport toward Madison. Miscellaneous local notices and an advertisement for Syrup of Figs.
All grocers who signed the agreement to close Thursday Aug 18 in honor of visiting grocers from Madison are asked to meet at the city council rooms tonight at 8 o clock.
